" When my grandfather was young, he knew a boy who made all the wrong choices. He ended up following in that boy's path; helping him along the way in search of power." Severus furrowed his brow, afraid of where this was going "what was the boy's name?" he questioned her his eyes never leaving hers.
She looked so ashamed, so scared of what he'd do or say after he knew the truth; the whole truth. However, Anastasia sucked in a breath and confirmed his fears.
"Tom Riddle"
Severus furrowed his brow at Anastasia, he'd never heard of a Death Eater with the name Tate. He knew only her father was magic which meant it was her grandfather on her father's side, Alexander Tate. "There was never a follower of The Dark Lord by the name Tate" he stated. Maybe she got confused. "You're correct about that." she confirmed, "but that's only because he changed his name after he faked his own death." Ana continued. This news surprised him. Running from Voldemort was an extremely dangerous risk to take; if The Dark Lord ever came across the truth it'd be a death wish, not only for Alexander but his whole family as well.
Severus had thought Anastasia could be in danger due to being associated with himself, but it turns out she didn't need his help to be put in harm's way. Being Alexander's granddaughter was all the danger she needed.
"what was his name?" Severus questioned her again, "Cillian Avery," she said in a hushed tone, nervous that someone might overhear even though they were in the privacy of her room. Severus nodded his head, knowing the story of Cillian very well.
Cillian Avery had been a friend of Tom's when they were in Hogwarts. He had helped Tom come into his power and was one of the original death eaters. He had been one of Voldemort's most trusted, Until the night of 8 November 1946 when a raid that he was leading went terribly wrong. Not only had the team of death eaters been illy prepared but the Aurora's had been tipped off and were waiting for them. Once the Death Eaters had arrived, a battle began between Voldemort's followers and the Auroras. In the midst of battle, someone unknown to any of them cast the confringo charm. This charm was sent straight into Cillian's chest and exploded on contact causing black smoke to cloud everyone's vision. Once the dust and debris cleared, there was nothing left of him; the spell had distorted him completely. After the other death eaters had seen this, they all disapparated and fled from the scene.
"you're confused, I know," Anastasia said after a few moments of silence, and judging from the look on Severus' face, she knew she'd have to explain. "My grandfather made many wrong choices when he was young; he murdered people, pillaged and tortured people, amongst other things..." Severus kept his eyes trained on hers with a hard expression, trying to understand how such a bright and joyous person like Anastasia could be related to a man like Cillian. He was by far the worst of them all back then.
"One day he met a woman named Jules Jenkins, she was breathtakingly beautiful, half vila and half witch. Beautiful dark hair with striking green eyes which entranced him. Not long after he met her, he fell in love. But she was good; she hated the idea of Voldemort and his followers and she let him know that, many times too." Anastasia smiled at the last part but Snape just stared at her; his expression never changing.
