Third Person Point of ViewSteve nearly dropped the phone to the floor after hearing Micheal say that Nancy had never shown up to her original tour. He was anticipating this type of response, but the fact being confirmed that Nancy did not show up makes the situation abundantly worse. His Nancy would never miss a tour, let alone one for college.
The rest of the group was huddle around Steve, in the same sort of formation that the basketball players at Hawkins high would do whenever they were on halftime, devising a plan for what they would do next.
"Hello? Are you there?" Micheal's voice is audible through the speaker of the phone, but Steve can't seem to muster the courage to respond, he doesn't know what to say at that.
"You..." Steve pauses, looking to Mike who simply shrugs at him.
It may not look as though Mike cares a whole lot about his missing sister, but the truth is Mile hasn't spoken a word to anyone since he heard the news. Nobody except Eleven. He doesn't want to say it, but he deeply relates to the position that Steve is currently in. Mike has also been fighting back tears, pushing his feelings into a bottle and desperately trying not to break in-front of his friends. Just acknowledging the fact that Nancy is missing is hard on Mike, and he would much rather pretend that it isn't real, as if Nancy isn't missing, and she will be returning home shortly from working on the newspaper or going for a walk.
Steve takes a deep breath, and the inner calculation of his words is visually apparent to the rest of the group. His eyes are narrowed, and he taps his fingers against the tile of the counter top as he attempts to formulate a response.
"You must be confused." He says finally, "Nancy does not miss things like that, not unless something really urgent were to come up."
"Or unless..." Robin doesn't finish her sentence, she doesn't have to. Speaking it out loud is hard, and the rest of the group already knows exactly what she was going to say. Nancy would never miss a college tour, not unless something really urgent came up... or unless something bad happened to her. Robin knew if she said this out loud, it would only cause her friends more stress, especially Steve. Robin cares for Steve, and she is hoping just as much as he is that Nancy will be okay, that they'll save her. She wants more than anything for her friends to be happy, and it hurts to see Steve like this, heartbroken, scared and without Nancy. It also hurt to think about what could be happening to Nancy at this exact moment, what she is feeling and thinking, and where she could be.
Dustin was thinking the same thing that Robin had been, but he did not dare speak it into existence. Similarly to Steve, Dustin felt like it was a bad omen to speak anything negative out loud, it also felt like admitting defeat... which they would not be doing. Dustin knew in his head that Nancy was alive somewhere, that she was fighting. Nancy had always been a fighter, and so has Steve. Due to this fact, Dustin had an immense amount of hope for them. Steve would rescue Nancy, and Dustin will make sure to do whatever it takes to help.
"I'm terribly sorry..." Micheal doesn't seem to know what to say, but you can't really blame him. He has obviously picked up on the fact that something probably happened to Nancy, but he doesn't know Nancy, he had never even gotten to meet her. He of course feels sympathy for Steve, who he is talking to on the phone, but the only response he can seem to muster out is, "I really hope everything works out for you, and I really hope she is okay."
After that, the phone line goes dead.
Steve's Point of View
I slam Mike's stupid landline onto the counter as rage pours through my body like a waterfall, "shit!" I scream, scaring the shit out of Dustin, who takes a step back from me.
