YOU NEED TO LET GO

4th of July 1985

She suddenly felt numb in the knees as she stared at the tank top as it turned from a white one to a crimson one. The top of her thigh was covered in red fluid, and her hands and knees were soaked in it as well. The red color was everywhere.

Her hands tried to stop any more blood from flowing as he gasped for air. "You don't get to die on me." Her voice rattled with panic, as tears ran down her face, landing on where her hands were covered. Mixing in with the blood.

She tried again to stop the bleeding but it was no use as he had too many puncher wounds for her to stop them. "Kenna." "No Billy, you can't say it," she said. Pleading for him to stay awake just a bit longer.

Kenna hadn't even noticed that Max had walked over until she saw the younger girl's arms gripping his shoulders, pleading for him to stand up. Still hoping that he would survive for the paramedics to take over, Kenna kept her hand on his chest.

"I'm sorry." With his last breaths Kenna heard Max starting to sob as El took her into her arms but she couldn't accept that their story would end like this. She had lost people close to her and she would be damned if it happened again.

With her fingers laced together, she started to press down on his chest, just like the first aid class she took had taught her to do. She was not about to let Billy die, he was not meant to die. "Kenna we have to go." Steve approached her, placing a hand on her shoulder. "I can save him."

Steve just stood by as the girl tried her best to revive him, watching as she did chest compressions and mouth to mouth. The sobs that came from the back of her throat were violently loud. "Steve, we have to go." Nancy, Jonathan and Robin approached the pair.

"I can't leave him." Kenna had given up on chest compresses, as she looked down at Billy's lifeless figure. "Steve." Nancy's eyes soften giving him a nod. He understood what he had to do. He knew Kenna would hate him, but it was better for her to be safe than someone else dead.

Steve had grabbed her by her waist, holding her thrashing body tight against him as he picked her up to drag her out of the burning mall. "STEVE LET ME GO." Kenna screamed as Steve reluctantly ignored her screams. He was not just gonna let her die. Who would he be if he let her die alongside Billy in the fire?

Once outside of the mall he let her continue to rant, her hatred she held for him. He just stood there letting Kenna release her emotions. Her face was puffy because of her anger towards Steve and her tears for Billy. He knew this wasn't going to be easy.

But her most dreadful day was yet to be over.

After Steve convinced Kenna to get checked out and then kept her company as she grieved, Joyce Byers had come into sight. She was dressed in the Russian uniform with a sad look on her face, which only got sadder talking to El. It was only when Joyce spotted Kenna that Steve knew things were not going to turn out well.

"Joyce, where is Dad?" The sound of Kenna's broken voice was enough to send Joyce into full blown tears, as she stared into the void of the night, processing what had happened. She lost almost everyone who was close to her in her life.

The first time her mother dropped her off at her father's house when she was only a week old, she never returned. When she was a young girl, her sister Sara died of cancer. The divorce was finalized shortly afterwards with Diane leaving Jim and Kenna with Jim. She can understand that it wasn't easy for him and he sought help in many different forms: from pills to alcohol, he's tried them all. A creature from another dimension killed her friend Barb when she was 16 years old. Now tonight she has lost her first love and the man she has always looked up to. And now neither are coming back.
