Jake's POV

Earlier — School Parking Lot

I sighed. "One day, everything you've done will catch up to you."

As I reached for my bag, I opened my car door. That's when I saw her. My ex.

"Jake, can we talk?" she asked softly.

I hesitated, then silently stepped toward her. Y/N rolled their eyes and slid into the car, slamming the door shut behind them. I knew they were trying to distract themselves, probably scrolling through their notes, but my focus was entirely on the girl standing in front of me.

"Are you doing okay?" I asked, my voice laced with concern. "You can still change your mind—"

She cut me off, shaking her head. "Please be nice to her," she sniffled, her voice barely above a whisper. "Y/N seems to be the perfect match for you. So please, be nice to her like you were to me."

My brows furrowed, anger bubbling inside me. "What? Why are you—Can you just stop and come back to me? I can end this with her in an instant. Just say the word. Just say you'll come back to me."

She shook her head more firmly this time, tears welling up in her eyes. "You have to let me go, Jake."

My grip tightened around her wrist as she tried to walk away. "Why are you saying this?" I demanded, my voice breaking. "What made you give up so easily? This isn't you!"

Before I could say another word, a sharp sting exploded across my cheek. She had slapped me.

She gasped, covering her mouth as if she hadn't meant to do it. "I'm so sorry," she whispered before turning on her heel and running away.

I stood there, stunned. My face stung, but the ache in my chest was far worse.

Without thinking, I stormed back to my car and slammed the door shut. I gripped the steering wheel tightly, my knuckles turning white before I let out a guttural scream, my frustration and heartbreak erupting all at once.

When I finally calmed down, I noticed Y/N sitting in the passenger seat. They had been there the whole time, silent. I didn't say anything. Instead, I started the engine and drove them home.

As I was driving back to my place, I heard a ping and glanced down. Y/N's phone was lying on the floor of the car. I picked it up, noticing a message from their mother.

Right... Y/N must have dropped it when I was lashing out earlier. Great.

Sighing, I turned the car around. Looks like I had to make another trip back.
