Clay
Wednesday, November 24
[tw: none]

After the last period I walk with Sam to the hallway. I'm glad the day is over. I couldn't pay attention to any class, that's how tired I was.

Yesterday I went to sleep at 3 am, at 10 pm I called my mom. Something inside me had the hope she would say: I'm not going, Clay, I'll stay with you.

But she started talking about the things she was gonna do in New York without me. She had an appointment with a client Saturday but she also had time to go shopping and go sightseeing.

Oh yes, and she was going out for dinner with a friend she had met there. I didn't like hearing it and I know she knew that. But she didn't care. She just kept on going.

"I'm gonna ask my mom if we can make pizzas ourselves." I look up at Sam. "What?" I say.

"About Friday?" He says. "Oh yes! I'd love that."

"And we could watch a movie, with lots of popcorn and chips." He says. "And Ben&Jerry's" I add.

"Don't run away, I can't go without you idiot." He says punching my arm. "Okay, I won't." Laughing, Sam and I walk out of school.

Everywhere people are talking in small groups, but nobody pays attention to us as we pass by.

"Do you wanna go home with me?" Sam asks while he unlocks his bike. "Maybe we could start working on that biology project."

"Sorry I can't, I have football practice." I say. "Oh yes, I still have to get used to you being in the football team." Sam says.

"I actually thought..." Then he's silent. Like he is holding something back. "I thought you would've quit football."

I laugh. "Why would you think that?" I say. "Just because the guys in the football team are just so... different you know."

"Wouldn't you wanna do basketball with me? Everyone misses you." Sam says soft.

"No." I snap. Maybe they are different from you, I want to say but I hold back. Sam doesn't mean it as a personal attack.

He is saying the truth Clay, you know that too...

"I also have to keep doing football because of my dad. And if I don't like it at the end of the season I can switch." I say.

"I hope you'll join our team again." Sam says smiling at me. "Come on let's go, it's freezing out here." He says.

With our bike we walk to the direction of the gate. "I'll see you tomorrow!" Sam shouts. He gets in his bike. "Have fun at football practice!"

"Thanks." I wave and look at him until he disappears around the corner. With a sigh I put my backpack in my basket and I go the other way, to the dunes.
