Chap 6- The date is sealed

OM NIVAS 6:30 PM

"Lalaji, you did a great job by calling us here. Even we were thinking the same thing," Veer's father said while sipping his tea.

"Beti badi ho gayi hai barister sahab," Lalaji said," now I dont want any more delays in her wedding."

"Pandit ji," Veer's mother said," please find an auspicious date for the wedding."

Amrit stood behind one of the pillars of the house listening to all this.

"Ten days from now," pandit ji said,"is a very auspicious day."

"Rab di meher," Amrit's mother said smiling.

Both the families exchanged sweets and gifts.

Wiping her tears, Amrit rushed to her room.

"Oye hoye hoye hoye hoye," said Vashma getting up,"Hmm. So when is the date fixed?"

"Ten days from now," said Amrit hiding her sorrow.

"Sachi!" rejoiced Vashma," I am so happy for you Amrit. Finally, all your dreams are going to come true."

Amrit looked at her school bag lying on the desk and thought," all my dreams........................"

9PM BAIG MANZIL

"Vashma still isnt home abbu," Abrar said to Dr. Baig

"There is nothing to worry Abrar. She is in om nivas."

"Thats exactly why I am worried abbu. Those people might just brain wash her and........."

"What is wrong with you Abrar!" Dr. Baig scolded him," those people were the ones who took care of you and your ammi when she was pregnant with Vashma, those people were the ones who lent me money without ever asking for it back, those people were the ones........"

"Calm down please......" his wife Zahida tried to calm him down.

"Your son has gone completely insane Zaheeda! Look after him before he becomes a religious fanatic!"

Saying so, Dr. Baig left the room.

"What wrong did I say ammi?" Abrar said," arent those hindus a threat to us?"

"Dont think too much Abrar," Zaheeda Begam said," I will get Vashma married very soon. And Amrit is going away after ten days. Then she will have no reason to go into that house again and again. And for heaven sake, stop making   your father angry."

9:30 PM OM NIVAS

"Just ten days," said Vashma looking at her and Amrit's childhood pictures,"thats all the time we have now."

"Hum ladkiyan itni jaldi badi kyun ho jaati hain?" said Vashma," then we have to leave everything and go away forever."

"I will write you letters," said Amrit trying to cheer her up," and I will tell you everything about my new life and in-laws."

"Yes," said Vashma wiping her tears,"and I will write to you everything about whats going on in Lahore!"
