A/N: Sorry, I know it's been a while since I've updated, I just caught up with end-of-the-school-year stuff. I've finally graduated high school and I'm in my summer transitioning to college, so things have been kind of hectic. Hope you enjoy this chapter!

A sort of 2yeon backstory, (and a bit of perspective from Chaeyoung) starting in the present and ending in the present, with flashbacks in between :)

TW: some violence and minor mention of blood for a spar between 2yeon in the first flashback and minor mention of intrusive thoughts in the flashback with Chaeyoung seven years ago

Nayeon saw it, heard it, felt it even. Her daughter and the princess, it was meant to happen. She didn't need to be a protector to know that, although it did help. She first caught on to the fact she was one when she was at the academy. It was there she realized she could see auras around people's bodies. At first, it scared her. Some people had multiple colors, others didn't have any. Some were naturally large and others not as much. They also shrunk and grew depending on the person's emotional or physical reactions to a situation. She tried to ask what it meant but all she got were head shakes and weird stares. Even the leader of the academy—Master Kim—only had a faint hunch. It wasn't until her fateful meeting with Yoo Jeongyeon that she understood what it all meant.

Their first encounter was surprising and unexpected, especially since Nayeon was the top trainee in the academy at the time. Jeongyeon had challenged her to a spar.

Ten years ago

Nayeon was one year into the academy and had built up a reputation as one of the best trainees the academy has ever seen. She was exceptional in both the academic and physical spheres. She received the top scores on exams and never lost a spar. But, all of that changed when on one fateful day, her life got turned upside down by the sudden presence of someone named Yoo Jeongyeon. From the moment she walked into the academy, Jeongyeon was a force to be reckoned with. There was just this certain quality about her that attracted people, and Nayeon wasn't an exception to that.

Not even halfway through her first day, Jeongyeon saw Nayeon walking around and started pointing at her. It was a challenge, Nayeon knew that much.

"Ah, Yoo Jeongyeon, the new trainee, to what do I owe the pleasure?" Nayeon asked with a teasing smile.

"Im Nayeon. They say you're the top trainee here, right? I want to spar with you," Jeongyeon said with an equally teasing smile.

Nayeon was rightly taken aback for a moment, but responded, "You want to challenge me on your first day? If you insist. I accept your challenge."

They walked over to the designated sparring area and readied themselves.

"Ready whenever you are," Nayeon said.

"Ready," Jeongyeon said.

They counted down from three and when the countdown ended, Jeongyeon threw the first punch. The aura around her grew even larger than it originally was. Multi-colored with yellow-green taking the biggest fraction. Nayeon thought it fit her as she dodged to avoid the punch and punched back. Jeongyeon covered Nayeon's fist with her palm and twisted her wrist in order to stop her from punching her. Nayeon pried her wrist out of Jeongyeon's grip as a crowd formed around them. She kicked Jeongyeon's legs out from underneath her, but Jeongyeon didn't stay down for long, springing up about a second later to punch Nayeon in the back. Nayeon was caught off guard and got the wind knocked out of her. She gasped in surprise but recovered after a few seconds and delivered an equally devastating blow, hitting Jeongyeon square in the face.
