Type of story: Smutt with plot

AU: A universe where everything is normal, but certain mythical sea creatures--ones associated with pirates and what not--are real. No quirks.

Basic summary: While collecting shells for his mother's birthday gift, Shoto is accidentally swept out to sea. Luckily enough for him he is saved by a merman  named Kirishima. Being fascinated by such an interesting human, who seemed to be going against all he was taught about the species, Kirishima asks the boy if they can hang out more often. This leads into a close relationship that eventually leads to something more.

First encounter:

Standing along the ocean shore, Shoto Todoroki stood motionless as to allow the breeze to whip through his red/white hair. The view beyond looked magnificent as the setting sunlight glistened off of the ocean's surface, the sky partially cloud covered and was a beautiful mix of blue, purple, pink, orange and yellow.

Breathing in the salty sea air, Todoroki let out a deep sigh as he felt some of the strain in his muscles melt away. It reminded Todoroki of his childhood; a simple yet brief time when his mother was more involved.

She had a deep fascinating with the ocean, you see, and wanted to pass this love onto her youngest child. They would both often come out to this spot to collect sea shells and watch the sun set, just like he was doing now. Only this time around, he was alone.

He was seven years old when it happened; the day Rei Todoroki finally snapped after year's of dealing with her husband's abuse. Shoto had walked in on his mother having a conversation on the phone with someone, talking about how she was going to run away and leave her family behind.

Naturally this upset the poor child, but it only got worse as Rei flew into a fit of hysteria as she saw the left side of his face, which bore a resemblance to his old man. The next thing Shoto could remember was boiling water being poured over the left side of his face, searing pain following right after.

His state was worsened further when Rei had semi came back to her senses, using ice to try and nullify the pain. However this made the pain even more intense and Shoto had to be rushed to the hospital. This incident left the boy with a forever-lasting scar that surrounded his eye and trailed down to where his neck connected to his head.

From that day on Shoto's mother has been in a mental ward, and just this past year he's started visiting her. She's gotten a lot better, which made Shoto happy. He wanted nothing more than to have his mom back home and take trips to the beach with her again. Just like old times.

Her birthday was coming up, so Shoto wanted to make a birthday gift for Rei. Seeing as she loved sea shells so much, he thought he'd make her a picture frame made up of them. That's why he was here. Fuyumi had told him about how rough the waters have been and the recent shark sightings, trying to convince her brother to just buy fake shells or order real ones online.

This option seemed redundant; there was a perfectly good ocean here with hundreds of free shells, why would he buy fake ones from some rando on the internet? With a cloth baggy in hand, Todoroki began roaming around on search for the prettiest shells he could find.

Closing his eyes, Shoto tried to remember if his mom at any point had said anything about shells. His brain thought up a distant memory from long ago, back there on the beach just like he was right now.

"Oh, these are just beautiful honey." she coos as Shoto handed here a handful of horn shells, "How did you know momma loved these the most? Such a good son you are."
