Jisoo POV
It was nearing midnight and the fireflies came to join the celebration as they swirled around me. They were like stars up close, ones that I could touch, and I reached for one but Kiyong caught my hand.
"Careful. You might hurt them," he teased. He pulled me by the hand and wrapped his arms around me from behind.
I giggled in his embrace, his warmth engulfing me completely. I could feel his breath against my ear, the heartbeat in his chest, and the tingly feeling in my stomach whenever he hugged me like this.
He took a look at his watch and there was a minute left to go until the clock strikes 12. He moved his pointer finger to the sky and my eyes followed in that direction. "My mother told me that if you wish upon the first star to appear in the night sky, your wish will come true. Try it."
"But you found the star. Shouldn't you be the one to make the wish?" I asked and he chuckled.
"How about we both make one? One of our wishes are bound to come true."
I smiled, "Okay. Let's both make a wish."
"You have to close your eyes," he instructed. "Are they closed?" He let go of me to make sure and I closed my eyes to make a wish in my head.
I wished that Kiyong and I could do this together every year. I didn't think it was too much to ask.
When I opened my eyes, Kiyong didn't look like he closed his eyes at all. "Did you not make a wish?" I asked, holding his hands.
A smile grew on his face as he shook his head. "I had to make sure your wish would come true."
I stepped forward and hugged him, pressing my cheek against his chest. He hugged me back and his hand rubbed my back soothingly. He placed a kiss on the top of my head and I closed my eyes again.
"I hope your wish comes true," he said quietly.
I smiled, "Me too."
"Jisoo-yah..."
I lifted my head to look up at him, "Yeah?"
He tucked my hair behind my ears as I gazed into his twinkling eyes. "Happy New Year."
Another smiled spread across my face as I replied, "Happy New Year, Kiyong-ah."
