Her mind was whirling. She felt dizzy, like if at any moment she would topple over the edge of the cliff, just as Luke had seconds before.
Luke.
Bryana gasped before letting out an ear-piercing scream. She stumbled over to a nearby rock, falling carelessly onto it, losing her breath. She felt as if she would pass out at any second, and she didn't dare walk over to the cliff's edge, knowing she would fall right off if she did.
"Bryana? What's wrong?" someone asked her later on. She wasn't aware of how many minutes had gone by, she was too busy wallowing in her sorrows. Still in a daze, unable to grasp the news, Bryana didn't even notice the boy sit by her. He began to rub her back, but she still didn't notice. "Bryana, it's okay. I'm okay."
She screamed again, letting her head rest in her hands. She knew she would puke any second if she held her head high.
"Bryana, it's okay. Look at me," the boy said again. She didn't dare look up. He shook her, hoping she would stop screaming.
She screamed again, feeling even dizzier than before. "Michael! Michael! Help me!" It was no use. He would never hear her. His stupid music was far too loud.
"Bryana." She looked up, startled. Suddenly she let out a gasp, feeling her heart drop. She wouldn't stop looking at him. She just couldn't. Bryana was in a daze. Her now very dilated pupils bore into his clear blue irises. Suddenly she came to her senses and wrapped her arms around him, taking in his scent, letting out a sob. She didn't dare cry, though. She never cried. She hadn't cried in years.
"Luke!" Bryana screamed. "Why would you be so stupid? I thought you were dead!" She pounded her fists into his chest, her sweatshirt riding up, revealing her stomach. "How could you do something like this?"
"Shhh . . . calm down, Bry, you're going to be okay," Luke whispered, unfazed. Bryana's hits weren't hard.
Her face turned from hate to anger in a couple of seconds. "How could you pull something so stupid? Luke - I-I I don't know what to say. What-how did you fall? I mean - how did you not . . . die?" She was too weak to do anything at this point, so she just scooted away from him and hoped her wouldn't try to touch her. He didn't.
"There's a ledge. I jumped down onto it. I know what I did frightened you, and I'm really sorry. I just needed to do something to get your attention. You were just so out of it," Luke said, reaching out to grab her hand. She angrily pulled hers away, watching as Luke's face contorted into a hurt frown.
"I hate you!" she screamed suddenly. She stood up, wiped her face, and walked as quick as her legs could take her to Michael. He was perched on a rock, bobbing his head up and down to the music. She gritted her teeth and grabbed his shoulder.
He jumped, and Bryana grabbed him harder to steady herself. "We're leaving," she growled. "We're leaving now. Pack up your stuff. Let's go." She walked away from him slowly, still worried she would fall. She stumbled, but put her arms out, and caught herself.
"Why do we have to leave?" Michael asked, pulling his Beats down over his neck. He trailed behind her, choosing a new song on his old blackberry. "Bryana, are you okay? You look like you've just seen a ghost."
"No, Michael! I'm not okay!" Bryana screamed, turning back to him, stomping both of her feet on the ground angrily. "Luke just pulled a horrible stunt and now I'm going home. If you want to come too, get in the car."
"Bryana, I'm sorry - " Luke tried to say, but Bryana cut him off as soon as he started to talk.
"No one wants to hear it, Luke. Just shut up," she snapped, walking faster. Her heart rate was finally going back to normal. She could no longer hear her heart beating in her ears. She felt refreshed.
