"Well, I'm sorry, Ashton, I'm disappointed too." Bryana blew on her nail polish, tapping her phone screen carefully, so the screen wouldn't go dark. She loved looking at Ashton's icon, it was super cute.

Ashton whined on the other end.

She didn't mind the whining. She was pleased that breaking their date had gotten him so upset.

"Well, what about tomorrow night? I'm sure the same film will be playing." Ashton had to go somewhere with his parents tomorrow night.

"Well, maybe next week," Bryana said, glancing at the clock on the wall behind her bed. She was supposed to meet Luke at the mall in five minutes.

She felt her phone vibrate on her bed. She had a new text from Luke. It said something about her being late. She deleted the message from her home screen.

Oh, well. Let Luke wait a while, she thought. It wouldn't be the first time. The thought of that night back in October when she had hidden behind a post and watch him wait. What a night!

Why won't these nails dry?

Now Ashton was asking if he could stop by later. No way, dude. Don't be clingy.

"No, that's not a good idea, Ash. My mum is really sick. It's the flu. That's why I promised I'd stay home."

He wanted to talk more, but she hung up, careful not to smudge her nails. What a good liar I am, she thought. Even I believed that story. Luke thinks he's such a good actor. But I can act circles around him!

Luke.

Was she really going out with Luke?

More to the point: Why  was she going out with Luke?

She didn't feel anything for him anymore. One of the only reasons she was still with him was because she found him ridiculously attractive. She didn't like admitting it - even to herself - but she had that tiny bit of disappointment upon learning that he was alive.

She tried to force that thought from her mind. It was an unspeakable thought, after all. But somehow it kept drifting to the surface of her thoughts.

So why  was she standing up Ashton so she could go to the movies with Luke tonight?

Frankly, she admitted, she didn't know. She felt really confused.

She was sure that after spending the evening with Luke, she'd be able to start sorting things out in her mind.

Ashton was so sweet, so boyish, so charming, so right.
