A long, long time ago, humans destroyed our planet.
The air became unbreathable, the soil infertile, the earth uninhabitable. All seemed lost for them, diseases skyrocketed until humans were forced to leave the ground, immersing into the seas and creating an odd new way to extract the oxygen out of water, enabling them to breathe freely once again.
Generations passed and thanks to the biological warfare that caused the end of the world, humans were able to evolve into something else - no, not mermaids - but they acquired the unique ability to breathe underwater without any help, and membranes in their hands and feet to help them swim in what was their new home.
But our greed is greater than that, it knows no bounds, and once we completely conquered the seas, we yearned for the land our ancestors had destroyed, wishing to start anew, mending their past mistakes. So we packed and emerged once again, taking what we believed to be our birthright, our ancient legacy.
I hope when we get to land to find a new home there, that it grows and grows until our species is as big as it once was. But I also hope we learned from our mistakes and don't destroy our home again with our greed and ambition. To build a definitive hearth here would be like the end of a cycle, and it could mean the beginning of a new one.
However, my biggest desire is to find the knowledge we lost when we fled to the sea and to learn more things. This is not only an opportunity for us to rebuild in size but also to rebuild academically and culturally, to learn from our ancestors' mistakes and make better decisions for our future. We have everything in our power to be better; I hope we succeed.
