If anything brought together a group of a clashing team. It would be dogfight football. In Maverick's time, it seemed to work, so he had to give it a try.
Before the game started, Nat and Rooster decided to go see if Ava wasn't too busy at the bar. They wanted to see if she wanted to be a part of the game. After all, Nat had extra clothes for this.
Ava was in the back counting new inventory when she heard her name.
"Ava!" Nat called to her in the back.
Ava looked away from the clipboard and listened, was her Aunt Penny calling her?
"Ava!" Nat yelled now.
Ava walked her way toward the front and saw Nat and Rooster standing around the bar. "Oh, hey Nat..." Ava stopped. "Hey, you," she looked to her boyfriend. "Wait, aren't you two supposed to be out training...? Why are you two wearing that?" Ava was filled with confusion and wonder.
Before Nat had the chance to say anything. Rooster spoke. "Dogfight football baby," He grinned, perfectly showing his white teeth to her. He was wearing his ripped blue jeans shorts with a white beach button-up t-shirt.
Her Aunt Penny walked in. "Oh hey!" she greeted Nat and Rooster she patted Rooster on the back before hugging Nat. "Sweetheart," She turned to Ava. "Go and have fun."
Down at the beach near Hard deck, the waves swifted back and forth between the players' feet as they ran through the sandy wet ground.
Rooster ran after Ava as she held on to the ball. She tossed it over to Jake, who caught it and made a run for it.
"Yeah!" Payback lifted both his hands up for high fives, and Ava obliged by meeting his hands for a quick smack, both cheering. Their team had scored. Coming into view, Jake blew Phoenix a teasing kiss like he always did. So, no one suspected a thing. Or so he and Nat thought.
Rooster stared at Ava from the other side. He couldn't help it. She looked good so good he clenched his jaw and looked away. Rooster always loved red on Ava and that red bikin she had put on was just enough to drop the ball, march over to her, lift her up and carry her off to the back at Hard deck were he could have his way with her. He grinned over at her. I mean, they had in the past.
"Come on, Ava, don't let Rooster swoon you! We need this point!"
Jake thought it would be fair if Ava would be on his team. Before the game even started, Rooster hadn't cared over who was going to be captain of each team. But he was chosen, so Hangman thought it would be fair he pick himself. That's when they both decided to see who was going on whose team.
"Well, then," Rooster had said. "It's only fair the other best girl comes over to my team," he twisted the football over to his other hand.
Rooster was the only one who knew about Jake and Phoenix. A few days ago, while going home late from the showers, he heard Phoenix pressing someone to stop. At first, Rooster thought he was hearing things, but he followed the noise anyway. What he saw shocked him. At the moment, Rooster thought Jake was forcing himself on to his friend when he shoved him off and began punching him.
Phoenix screamed for Rooster to stop. Both rolled on the ground, fighting one another. But somehow, Phenoix managed to pull Rooster backward off from Jake as he got on his feet. "F**k man!" He spit. "I wasn't hurting her,"
Rooster looked over to Nat. "Nat?"
Nat groaned frustratedly. "We're...kinda seeing each other," she finally admitted. Her face was still filled with worry. She went over to Jake and touched his lip. Nat felt embarrassed, and her face filled with heat of red.
"I'm alright," Jake let her know.
"Jesus Rooster!" Nat hissed.
Rooster got on his feet. "Woah," he tried to calm her. "I'm sorry, I just thought..."
"Yeah well...you thought wrong," Jake wiped the blood off.
"That's why there are rooms with walls called homes, apartments that hold privacy!" Rooster included. "Jesus!" Rooster hissed. After that, they left it at that.
Rooster winked over at Ava, enjoying every angle of her body. He let out a deep breath as he threw the football perfecly into the air. Making him seemingly sexy as ever. Ava had to look away he was too hot for his own good, and right now, she needed to concentrate.
Maverick caught it and began to run through the players.
Over at the bar, Admiral Simpson walked up the deck where his sister was sitting and looked at the scene unfolding before him.
"What's going on here?" He asked.
"Oh hey," Penny smiled. "It's good to see you finally around here,"
Beau saw Ava as Rooster carried her by the waist and lifted her up. Then, he pulled her in for a kiss.
Admiral Simpson pressed his lips into a straight line.
"Yeah, that's your daughter. They're cute, aren't they?" Penny crossed her arms against her chest.
Beau glared over at her.
"She isn't a little girl anymore, Beau," Penny reminded her brother. Penny loved Rooster for Ava. She knew how much that boy loved her neice.
Beau grunted. He didn't need to hear this, not now. He made his way over toward the steps and onto the sand. It wasn't as hot out today. The air felt nice and fresh.
Rooster placed Ava on her feet and gestured with his head. "Baby, your fathers over there," Ava looked toward where he had pointed, and finally, she spotted her father next to her aunt. Ava ran her way towards them.
"Hey," she breathed. "Everything okay?"
Her father nodded. "Having fun?"
"Yes," she smiled. "Join us?"
"No, it's alright, sweetheart," he gave her a simple smile.
"I need to speak to Pete,"
Ava turned to see the team behind her. Her Aunt Penny walked over and stood by her. Both women lifted their palms over their forhead to keep the sun from blinding them and gasped at their sight.
Ava couldn't keep her eyes off Rooster. His muscles flexed as he jumped up, colliding with Coyote and then did a very small shimmy, enjoying his time, making her mind race to the most improper things. The things she would do to him. Her heart sped up. Her cheeks grew hot.
Beau rolled his eyes. Glanced over to Penny and Ava. Then, he did another quick glance back real quick to see their dumb faces. "Unbelievable," he murmmered.
Ava and Penny watched as Maverick fell over, and swiftly, without hesitation, Rooster went over to help Maverick on his feet. Then, he made his way over to his team. As if he hadn't just helped the man he hated up.
Before they knew it, Bob was making a run for it. "Touch down!"
Ava and Aunt Penny cheered as they lifted Bob into the air, who had scored chanting his name.
From afar, Maverick spotted Simpson and made his way to them.
That night after the football game, everyone gathered at the bar. Music played, and the smell of baked fish and chips filled the air, and laughter and dancing took over.
"Ava," Phoenix said, pulling her away to the side.
Ava knew she wanted to talk privately. "Hey, is everything okay?" She eyed her carefully.
"I just...I didn't know how to tell you about me and Jake," she looked down, almost ashamed for keeping it a secret.
Ava disagreed with her sorrowful look. She didn't care. If Nat kept it secret outside their friendship circle, it was because she had not been ready to tell her. Ava was not angry. "It's okay," she assured Nat, holding on to her shoulder. "I'm just happy you found someone even if it's Hangman," she laughed now.
Nat hugged Ava. But quickly rolled her eyes. "I'm like a school girl in love with a boy who acts like such a jerk..."
Ava grimaced at her.
"Okay, who can be because his so sweet his not as bad as you think,"
Ava smiled.
Phoenix breathed out. "Oh, Ava, come on, you'll like him. Give him time,"
Ava nodded. "Alright."
They went back inside. And taking her by suprise, and it shouldn't have by now. Was her boyfriends simple gestures. Rooster passed by her, kissing her hard on the forehead, leaving her behind. What?? She turned to his back only to see him racing toward the piano as Janice, the cooks' daughter, followed in prusit. Jancie beat him to it. They always did that. Ava laughed she headed over to see if her aunt needed any help. Penny stopped her. "No, go and enjoy your night with your friends," she didn't let her into the bar.
"Are you sure?" Ava asked. She looked around the bar.
"Yes," Penny grinned.
Ava turned her gaze over to Rooster, who now drank some beer and laughed it up with Bob patting him on the back so hard Bob's glasses flew free from his face and across the table.
Fanboy chuckled, handing them back to Bob.
Ava laughed.
"Let me just gather all the beer mugs, and I'll get out of your way," Ava told her Aunt. Ava walked around the bar, picking up empty pints.
Usually, the pool tables belonged to Ava and her friends. But tonight, a group of younger elite flyers took over. It didn't bother them.
Hangman and the rest sat on a long table that was able to fit all of them. Everyone ate and laughed at eachothers jokes. Ava went over to the pool table to pick up the cups that were already empty.
"Hey, sweetheart, how about you get us a few more drinks,"
Ava looked over at the tall pilot. "How about you don't call me sweetheart,"
The stranger chuckled. "Ooooh, the waitress has attitude," he turned to his group of friends who laughed.
He got closer to Ava, giving her no space for herself. "Back off," she warned in a low voice. She didn't want any problems, let alone have Rooster come over here. But it was too late. Jake was the one who had spotted the small ordeal.
"Is there a problem here?" Jake came up behind Ava. He was going to the restroom when he saw Ava shoot a distasteful glance at the guy.
Ava looked over at her bestfriends bf. Then, he glanced at the tall pilot. Her brow rose in question. "Well?"
The boys around the blonde started to get closer. Jake noticed this and chuckled. "You boys are too young for a beating,"
And there it was. Ava thought. Great. Before Ava could say anything. One of the other boys spoke. "Let's teach this Jackass and his b***h a lesson,"
Ava was gently pulled to the side. It was Rooster. He had just been heading to join Janice when he started searching for Ava and spotted Hangman standing in front of her. Rooster had gotten close enough to hear the stupid kid. He got on the kid's face so fast Ava had no time to blink. "What did you call my girl?"
It happened so fast the kid threw a punch at Rooster, but Rooster didn't even flinch he lifted the kid like a rag doll and tossed him hard across the pool table.
"Ahh!" Ava yelped jumping backward.
Nat ran over, but Jake shoved her out of the way as one of the other guys tackled him onto a chair. "Oooofff!" Jake huffed. As he hit his back hard against the wood.
Making Nat push Ava dropping all the pints shattering on the floor.
"Ah! hell nah," Payback and Fanboy jumped in.
All hell broke loose. Nat and Ava moved out of the way as Bob ran into the mosh pit of fighters.
Coyote yelled. "That's right... kick some ass Bob! I got your back!" He kicked someone on the nuts.
The fight was broken up by Jameson, the local cop. His son who was a professional wrestler. The irony.
"How are we the ones who ended up outside, man?" Payback wondered.
They sat on the deck around the chairs and tables.
Ava and Phoenix handed out ice packs over to the men.
"Here," Aunt Penny placed a bucket of ice on the edge of the table. She was very disappointed in them and went back inside into the bar.
"You, okay baby?" Rooster eyed Ava. He sat on the top of the wooden table. Ava dapped at the cut on his bottom lip. He flinched.
"Oh, now he flinches," she breathed.
"Before you get mad at me, I couldn't let anyone speak ill about you," he touched her hand.
"I'm not mad," Ava said. His blue Hawaiian shirt and the muscle shirt underneath had a few drops of blood.
Rooster kissed her lips softly. "I love you," he murmured in his deep voice.
At the other end of the tables. Nat face creased with worry.
"I'm fine," Jake pressed soothing Nat's arm as she worridely eyed him. He comforted her by throwing her a kiss.
Bob groaned as he put ice on the side of his jaw. "Tell me how I ended up with such a crazy group of friends?"
"Damn, man, when you bit into that white boys arm, I lost it, man," Coyote laughed.
"You lost it? Did you see that slam? Cause that poor dude nuts..." fanboy laughed. "His probably still passed out."
Everyone started laughing.
"I didn't know the chair was pointing that certain way." Bob came to his defense.
"Them nuts be sore tomorrow morning," Payback laughed.
"Man, you did good, Bob!" Hangman got in his feet.
"Too Bob!" They all cheered in union. Bob smiled widely and proud. This was the second time he was praised today. He loved it.
"Give me a sec," Rooster told Ava. He got on his feet and walked toward Hangman.
"Hey, uh, i wanted to thank you for what you did back there for Ava,"
Jake stared at him with amicably. "You would do the same for Nat,"
Rooster nodded. "I would."
"As cheesy as it sounds," Hangman looked to the girls. Rooster joined his gaze. "We're a team man,"
Rooster chuckled. "You're right it does sound cheesy!"
