"You are home. I can't believe this day has come." She said as the silence between us became unbearable.
"How? How long? I can't..." I was unable to finish my sentence as I began to cry again. Tears streamed down my face like a waterfall.
My sister wiped my tears with her handkerchief. She still carried these? I thought to myself."Let's go inside."
My sister prepared hot tea as I looked around the home we shared with our parents. It has not changed much. She kept the place exactly how our mother wanted it. She is sentimental and wanted to uphold the memories we shared as a family.
"You have no idea how long I have waited for this moment. I kept my promise. I waited patiently for you to come home." She said as I took a sip of my tea. Her eyes were brimming with tears.
"Promise me, Sis. If I have not come home after ten, fifteen even twenty years because I have forgotten or chose to forget... help me remember. Make me remember. Please promise me! Wait for me to come home."My sister and I stood next to our father's grave. It was my last day on the farm. Our mother agreed that I am to stay with our relatives for I'll be starting school in the city next school year. I am turning 16. My sister was 12. The bus will arrive soon. We made our promise official with a pinky swear and sealed it with our right thumbs pressed together. I kissed her and gave her a long, final hug as we tearfully said goodbye.
I can still notice her walk with a slight limp as she began to walk towards me and sat on the chair next to mine. I avoided her eyes as my lips began to quiver once more.
