"I am not!" I retorted with some degree of irritation. She definitely knows how to push my buttons. Upon hearing my reply, my sister laughed even more.
I felt a leaf fall on my coat. It was almost all orange with a touch of yellow on one side. I love fall. Autumn as some would prefer calling this season. The leaves are so pretty especially when they start falling on the ground. The colors of foliage change and the wind is cooler. This is the season I am looking forward to the most every year.
"Why do plants shed their leaves before winter? It turns out autumnal leaf drop is a form of self-protection. Since water expands when frozen, the tender leaf cells would rupture during winter, making them useless for Photosynthesis. Without dropping these leaves, trees would be stuck with thousands of appendages and no way of making food! Dropping them gives the plant a fresh start in the spring and the nutrients from the decaying leavesare recycled to help grow the next leafy generation." I listened intently as the botanist of the museum spoke.
My sister feigned a bored look and suppressed a yawn with her hand. She then looked at me and winked. I grinned. She knew how much I love fall.
Even more so now.Spring may bring a more obvious positive change. Autumn can too. From intense heat the season before to milder temperatures. This year, it has a different meaning to me.
Fall means renewal. A new lease on life for I have forgiven myself.
