The keys jangle in the lock and with a bit of a wiggle I'm inside the house. I don't exactly go in, as I still need to give Jasper his walk. I call out his name and I see him coming down the hallway. I get his leash and stuff it in my pocket and we're out, locking the door behind me. It's about half four in the afternoon, so I got at least two hours before Mom and Dad come back. We walk for ages. In fields, I throw Jasper a stick quite far for him to return to me for his exercise and we play a little on the grass. When the sun almost disappears, the lampposts turning on in the orange sky, we decide to back home. I give Jasper some food in his bowl and that's my work done. I go upstairs and lay down on my bed, staring at the ceiling like it was the most interesting thing in the world. I walk over to my balcony, which has two small egg chairs and a round glass table in the middle, with a giant closed umbrella over it which I only use for when there I rain, and peer over the edge, watching the city that never sleeps, being noisy outside my driveway. Just about, I see a speck of red and blonde hair. Familiar hair. I look over some more and see Jessie, Emma with bags in their hands, and Zuri and Ravi.
They are crossing over my house, 'hey, guys!' I call out. They're not that far apart from me and they hear me perfectly. They look over to the direction of my voice and glance a little upwards. I'm glad they smile and say hey back and we all wave at one another before we make our own way away. I go downstairs and find Jasper just finishing his food. He follows me into the living room and curls up next to me on the cream soft couch. I find this very comforting and anyway, I'm sure Mom won't mind. I watch TV for a while when I hear the front doors open and in come Mom and Dad smiling and giggling. I can tell their first day on the job went well, and that calms me down a little. Mom and Dad are hardly ever angry at me for anything I do. Dad never has even once told me off. The last time Mom yelled at me, was when I was two years younger and all I did was forget to make my bed when my cousins arrived, and I'm pretty sure she noticed Jasper on the couch, but she didn't even sigh or give a face. She evens ruffles him under his ears when she tells the good news.
'Your Dad and I were told we we were perfect for the job. But, it's a big timetable. It's work every day from ten, and it could even go overnight. We might have to go to other cities. But it's all worth it. The salary is great.'
It's not like we're not rich already, I mean look at this house. But I'm not complaining when it comes to making more money for us.
'We start the actual first day of the job properly next week,' Dad says. 'So, we got plenty of time to look you a babysitter.'
'I don't need a babysitter. I'm not a baby, and I don't like to be sat on!' I say crossing my arms. 'And besides, you just left me home alone for about an hour.'
'Yes, that was just an hour,' Mom says. 'We could be gone for about half a day, to plural days to even weeks by the looks of it.'
'Really? Is that how big your new job is?' I ask surprised. Mom and Dad exchange smiles to each other. 'But I'm perfect fly old enough to look after my own self.'
'Don't be ridiculous, Jasmine,' Mom says. My parents don't normally say my first name fully unless they're being really serious. 'You're not old enough. Sure, we can trust you for about half a day on your own, but more than a day? You won't be able to eat a balanced diet properly. You'll end stuffing your face in chocolate, candy and potato chips.'
Mom does have a point there. I do love chocolate.
'It might not even be a babysitter, more like a nanny,' Mom drones on.
'Luke has a nanny called Jessie,' I say but Mom doesn't really listen. It's like she's talking mostly to herself than addressing it to me.
'Ok Mom I get it. Fine,' I sigh and walk out of the room. I go next door to the other lounge. The floor here is black carpet and the wallpaper is white with black stars in different sizes. It's got a couple of white soft couches and a large silver piano with a comfortable stool in one corner of the room. On the other end has my guitar in its case and a microphone and headphones on its stand, plugged out of its socket. I'm the only one who uses this room, so I use it just to sing or play guitar whenever I'm bored or whenever I'm alone and am just feeling the mood to do this. Have I told you I do this in my spare time? No, of course I haven't. It's just embarrassing for me. I don't want anyone to know, just my family know and they sometimes, especially Dad, slip out the fact that I sing and play guitar and piano. I take my guitar out of its case and sit on the edge of the couch and start to strum a little tune that I made up. I play for a couple of hours after I have dinner because it relaxes me. It's a little late to go outside and play some basketball, so I go upstairs, brush my teeth and change into my pyjamas. I sit on my bed with my lamp turned on next to me and pull out my phone from underneath my bed. I just realise that I got a text from Luke a couple of minutes ago.
'I had fun today. We should do this again some time.'
I reply straight away.
'Yeah, me too. I'm glad we got to do this and hang out. Maybe some other time. Depends, really.'
I wait for a reply, wait for that alert and it comes in less than a minute.
'Definitely. I'm quite busy tomorrow, just realised. How about you?'
'Yeah, chores and take Jasper for a walk and get him to exercise.' I reply.
Luke answers immediately,
'So we'll do this next week yeah?'
'You bet. Well, goodnight Luke.'
'Night.' And with that, I switch my phone off, put it back under my bed and wrap myself in my duvet as tightly as I could.I walk into the house after Jasper and I's usual morning walk. I have a cereal bar to wake me up properly and help Mom cook some food to be ready for dinner and then tidy up the basement. I then help Dad in the garden, putting my bike back in the shed and putting the balls in its rack to be played later. After I do some dusting around the attic and basement, I go outside and jump on the trampoline. Of course, my accident was just a freak from the past so I'm not afraid to do more flips on here. Just make sure to always check if the zip is not undone. After a few jumping and somersaults, I play some basketball for about half an hour and play frisbee with Jasper that even Dad had time for. I don't want to be doing anything else the entire day, so I watch some TV and then finish off my incomplete homework that I really do not want to do. I get ready to take Jasper out for another walk in the afternoon, which I don't feel like, but, that is my job that I promised Mom and Dad to always do. We do the same usual things we normally do on a Sunday. The day goes past really quickly. And sooner or later, I quickly check my bags for school and climb into bed.
I walk into school with every other student and put my books in my locker. I keep my art folder to my chest, and when I close the locker door, I see the one face I've been waiting to see since morning.
'Hi Luke!' I give a small wave to the freckled boy and he leans against the locker next to mine.
'Hey,' he replies. 'So, did you have fun on Saturday?' he asks a bit seriously and I nod.
'Yes, it was amazing. A great way to start my life here in New York,' I say.
'That's good,' Luke mutters but I still hear him. 'So come on, let's go to art class.' I walk with him to the lesson and we sit down in the cacophony classroom a few tables between us. There were full of sounds like shouting, screaming, bustling about, chairs and tables being hit and paper airplanes being flown all over the room until the teacher walks in.At lunch, Luke asks me if I want to go to the park with him, Zuri, Emma and Ravi. 'Jessie says she'll meet us there. She also says to ask you to come along too. That is, if you want to.'
I jump at the chance, 'Of course I'll come with you. We'll have a lot of fun.'
'Great!' he says.
Before last period, I text Mom first.
'Can I go to the park with my friends after school?'
I get an immediate reply.
'Of course you can, have fun darling!'
I smile to myself the whole of last period, just waiting for the bell to just ring. When it does, everyone just drops everything and takes their books and pens and try to fit through the classroom door together to get out of the building. Luke waits for me outside with Emma, Ravi and Zuri and we all make our way to the park. A few minutes later of playing on the swings and slides- which I am not too old for- Jessie comes into the park, too and she smiles when she sees me. 'Hey, Jaz. Nice to see you again.,' she says sweetly.
'Hi Jessie,' I reply and sit next to her on the bench just chatting.
'You know, you should come over to our apartment more often. Don't worry, the only person who wouldn't like it is Bertram, and no one cares what he thinks.'
'I would like to come over Jessie, thanks. Mom and Dad have a new job that might even end up getting me a nanny, too or just a babysitter. But I'm not sure and they aren't either. But, I'm sure it will work out well.'
'Well, if your parents are away for a few days, you came come and stay with us,' Jessie says.
'Really?' I say surprised.
'Yeah, it'll be awesome!' Luke says sitting next to us.
Before I can say anything else, a girl with blonde hair in a side pony pops up in front of us and says in a really weird way, 'Hey Lukie Pookie!' she says grinning from ear to ear.
'Oh no,' Luke, Jessie, Emma, Ravi and Zuri all say.
Luke gets up and walks backwards, holding his hands up in surrender as this girl walks over to him.
'I thought you went to boarding school far away from New York!' Luke says.
'I did, but then I came back here because I missed you!'
'I thought you said you were over me,' Luke says.
'I am, can't you tell?' the girl says.
Everyone doesn't say a thing. Luke runs up to Jessie and hides behind her. I just stand there confused on who this girl is. It's like she read my mind, because she turns to me and just stares. Or, I think it's more of a glare. Before she can say anything to me, Jessie steps in front, like she knows what's going to happen next, 'Connie, such a pleasure to see your face again and your...bubbly personality!' Jessie says enthusiastically, or I think is what's she's trying to do. This...Connie girl. Did Luke mention here when I came to his apartment?Someone called Creepy Connie, yeah I have a strong feeling this is her.
'Lukie, did you get my text messages? I told you I'll be coming back last weekend!' Connie says turning to Luke.
'No! I deleted you ages ago. I had to change into a new phone just to get away from your many messages,' Luke says still hiding behind Jessie for protection. Protection from what? She seems like an ordinary girl who's just obsessed over a boy.
Connie's eyes twitch and it looks like she's trying to force a smile, 'well, that's okay because I'm here now!' and then she laughs what sounds like a maniacal laugh.
Yeah...
Creepy.
