During the 4 years naruto and Gaara grew to miss each other even more when they turned 11 they weren't able to messages each other anymore because it was mating season for the eagles then so gaara's eagle left to find it's mate.
Not being able to talk to each other for 4 whole years was stressful for them, worried about if the other is ok or not.
Also during those years sasuke and naruto grew closer, mostly sasuke always asking to hangout with naruto. Not that naruto minded his other friends sometimes couldn't join since they had special training, but sasuke didn't need as much training as the others did so a lot of the times it was sasuke and naruto hanging out together.
Sasuke couldn't have it any other way, but naruto, he felt a brotherly bond with sasuke and was to oblivious to see that sasuke was in love with him. .

Naruto woke up doing his morning routine but faster than usual today is when he'd find out who's on his team and he only likes very few in his class so naruto was praying that he at least needed to have one person he likes on his team.

Naruto entered the class and sat in his usual seat next to sasuke who was by the window.
Sasuke looked at the ring hanging from naruto's neck he always wondered how he got it or if someone gave it to him.
"Naruto? I've been meaning to ask this but, who's ring is that?" sasuke asked.
"Oh, it's mine, my mate gave it to me" naruto smiled sadly remembering the last day he saw gaara.
Sasuke's eyes widened, and his heart broke in half, naruto was already taken and he, his best friend, who knew him better than anyone else, didn't know.
"Mate?"
"Yeah, he left when we were about 8 or 9, we only knew because of our tailed beast. It was a shock at first and we wanted to take things slow so we aren't officially together, but we promised each other when we see each other again we'd be together forever".
By then tears were streaming down both their faces but for two totally different reasons.
Sasuke quickly wiped his tears and smiled, he wants naruto to be happy and even though it isn't him making naruto happy, it's worth it to see the smile naruto held.
