That night was tension filled. If you looked well enough, you would be able to see the displeasure rolling out of my stepmother's pores, like steam from an overzealous kettle.
I retired that night, after my father gave me his signature reassuring nod. I wanted to protest that it was simply too early, but he countered it by saying I needed my beauty sleep, eye bags on my first day were a huge NO, and proceeded to add that I was sporting remarkable ones already.
As I laid in bed that night, I listened to the rise and fall of their voices. I knew they were having a disagreement, and I also knew it had everything to do with my Admission letter.
I looked towards the dresser and saw my uniform hanging immaculately on a hook, and sent up a silent prayer.
"Oh God please help me fit in tomorrow."
I shuddered thinking of all the pampered royals and nobles who had never gone through a hard days work in their entire life, and suddenly felt terribly unsure.
It was well past midnight, and I was still awake due to unrestrained excitement pulsing through me. The thought of eyebags however, motivated me to sleep.
My dad was home, so I had what is popularly known as a temporary reprieve. I woke up, did my morning routine, cinched my corset even tighter than I normally would, petticoats, stockings, uniform, shoes, gloves, and finally with my bonnet set at a jaunty angle, i was ready to go.
My stepsisters were plain chaos this morning, shouting with ridiculously shrill voices, and repeatedly harassing our maid Dana, who looked thoroughly hassled.
I could not blame her though, for I was usually available to help. she usually helped and tended to the garden, but whenever my dad came back from his numerous travels, and I was required to play a noble man's daughter, she was required to take my place.
Finally we were all ushered into the carriage, for a most extraordinary journey.
Crammed in a carriage with my stepsisters is nothing to write about, with their annoying titters, and my stepmother alternating between proud affectionate looks at her daughters, and looking at me with the same disgust one would bestow on a rodent. Except for me though, I think animals and insects were a lot better than humans."Stop!" My stepmother ordered, once we had gone a decent distance from the house. We all turned to look at her inquiringly.
"You have to take it from here sweetheart." She told me, while her daughters confused looks turned to barely suppressed giggles.
"Excuse me but I do not understand." I replied.
" it is simple really, you have to walk from here to school, since you insisted on going." Turning her nose up at me, she added. "Although I do not know why rodents like you were allowed in the first place." She said, with no trace of human emotions.
"Its alright, walking in the fresh morning air beats riding in a carriage with you any day." I said and jumped down, happily exiting the carriage filled with people spotting exaggerated expressions.
I still had a few minutes to spare and if I walked fast enough, I could make it on time. All around me were colors, beauty and sparkling carriages. I could see different heads poking from lace covered windows to pair out and marvel at the school up ahead.
I was probably the only student walking on their first day, it does not matter anyways, since I suspected I would be walking quite frequently.
An extravagant carriage fit for royalty rolled past me, and I could not stop my jaw from dropping. Royals were not something seen everyday, but even my inexperienced gaze knew that this was no ordinary carriage. So imagine my surprise when it rolled past me and came to a halt.
Slowly I walked forward with every intention to pass, when the carriage doors slided open, and the most surprising young man stepped from it, and moved towards me.
He gave me a gallant bow, while I responded with an equally elegant curtsy. Why did he stop? just then his head lifted, and I caught sight of the most stunning green eyes I had ever seen.
