TW// Homophobia and mature conversations
After school Max and Jane rode the bus home together. They were both awkwardly silent. Until Max couldn't hold it in any longer.
"Hey Jane, did Mike tell you anything today? Like something big? Important?" Max asked, wondering if Jane knew about Will.
"No? He's been really quiet today actually...do you think I did something wrong?" Jane asked sadly, twisting her face into a frown.
"No, you didn't...maybe you should ask Mike why he's been acting weird. Communication is good..." Max didn't want to be the one to tell Jane. Finding out your brother likes your boyfriend can't be easy to hear.
"I will, I'm just afraid we'll break up..." Jane pouted. Her and Mike have broken up over a mild fight before. She didn't want history to repeat itself.
"I doubt you'll breakup." Max decided to change the subject. "So how was your afternoon classes?"
"Strange..." Jane shrugged. "In health class, we talked about sex and consent."
"Oh...guess you know a lot more now!" Max laughed awkwardly, she could tell Jane would have questions.
"Mrs. Brown says people of the same gender can have sex too. We talked about the um...LGBT?" Jane struggled to remember since she wasn't well educated on the LGBT+ community until now.
"Oh?" Max was surprised a teacher from their school would teach about that. "So what are your thoughts on the lesson?"
Jane simply shrugged. "It was kind of embarrassing...but interesting. I wonder if me and Mike will have sex..."
"Woah!" Max was quick to shut that thought down. "Slow down girl, that's not how it works. You don't just have sex-"
"Mrs. Brown says you should only have sex with people you love? It's supposed to feel good, right?" Jane was confused.
Max shook her head quickly. Wether it was trauma or possessiveness, she didn't like the thought of Jane having sex. "We're still young, there's no rush...plus you can accidentally make a baby."
Jane stared at Max for a moment. "A baby, right...but only a boy and girl can make a baby?"
Max nodded slowly. "Yeah...I mean unless we start talking about trans people...but that's a whole other discussion."
Jane tilted her head. "Do people have sex with their friends?"
Max nearly suffocated from how sharpy she inhaled. "Huh- what the hell?"
"If you love your friends, then do you have sex?" Jane was way too behind for her age.
"No!- I mean, I guess some people hookup with friends but...let's stop talking about this!" Max ordered after noticing a couple boys on the bus staring at them.

Jane and Max walked into the house and set their things down by the steps. The first thing Jane did was head upstairs to Will's room, to check on him.
Max lingered behind and made her way to the living room. Joyce was sitting on the couch with her laptop. She noticed Max staring at her, so she took a break.
"Hey Max, how did everything go today?" Joyce gave Max all her attention.
"It was alright...a lot less scary than I thought it would be." Max admitted. She definitely didn't want to open up to Joyce about anything, she had no idea why she even went into the living room.
"That's awesome!" Joyce smiled proudly.
"So...is Will okay?" Max asked.
"Yeah, I think so..." Joyce's smile faded. "He's just not feeling good. We all have bad days."
