"Maria, honey, I'm here." a sweet voice whispered in Maria's ear, waking the young girl with a start.
"Maria Oblique, to the principal's office, now." Maria's English teacher demanded. Shaking her head, Maria got up from her desk, feeling all of her classmates eyes on her and the snickers behind her back. Knowing what was about to happen, she let the door slam behind her and didn't look back, on her way to another expulsion.
"Ms. Oblique, due to your careless attitude towards your education and your reckless behavior, we must expel you. There will be no hearing, it is effective immediately. We have given you a multitude of warnings and you have ignored them all. We wish you the best and hope you can succeed somewhere else." While the principal finished her speech, Maria stared down at her feet, nodding along. "Please bring this home to your father. You will wait in the office until the bus comes." Maria grabbed the letter off of the principals desk and walked into the main office to spend the rest of her afternoon.
Unlocking the apartment door, Maria felt the stench of alcohol hit her in the face. Her dad was home, unconscious on the couch, too drunk to function. Stepping into the small apartment, she walked straight toward her room, crunching on empty beer cans on the way, not caring enough to avoid them. In her tiny room, Maria dropped her bag, grabbed a jacket, and went to leave the apartment when she remembered the expulsion letter. Grabbing the letter in her fist, she dropped it in her drooling father's lap and shut the door behind her, on her way to the roof.
There wasn't ever anyone up on the roof, so naturally that's where Maria went. The sky was starting to darken, the clouds made the entire city look dim and sad. Maria laid on the roof, sitting in silence, numb and tired. Rain drops started falling slowly, picking up speed and starting to pour. Maria didn't move. A rumble of thunder went off somewhere in the distance, it would eventually make it's way closer to Maria. She still didn't move. Maria had accepted her life was a train wreck, there was no point in denying it. Drunk father, mother in Sweden, according to her dad, no other family members that she knew of, living in a tiny, mess of an apartment, expelled from a couple of schools, and poor. Maria knew the cards weren't stacked in her favor, maybe that's why she didn't feel anything as she laid in the cold rain. Maybe there was something deeper going on, not like anyone would notice if there were. If Maria didn't come home, what would the consequences be? Would there even be any? Her dad would probably be relived she was gone, or he may not even notice. What about mom? Laying in the rain, Maria dug for any possible memory she had of her mom and couldn't think of a single one. She knew that she had met her mother at some point, but had no recollection or memories to prove that her mom had ever existed. The only proof was Maria herself.
As the rain slammed harder down onto her, Maria got up. In the distance there were dances of lightning across a dark sky. Walking slowly across the roof, she reached the edge. Still feeling nothing, no fear, no adrenaline, nothing. Stepping up, she stood on the very end and looked over the city, no one was watching, no one knew where she was, it's almost like she wasn't even there. Lightning was coming closer, the booming of thunder rattling Maria's bones. She took a look behind her, still alone. The feeling of the wind and rain was almost relaxing, making her feel calm as she hovered hundreds of feet above the ground. Putting one foot out, balancing on the other Maria almost lost her footing as she whipped her head around and caught a glimpse of red and a voice yelling, "Wait!" but then there was a flash of lightning and her other foot slipped.
Hurtling towards the cement, Maria closed her eyes, pushing out whoever was there, it was possible she imagined them, no one cared and neither did she. Her breath caught in her throat as she smacked onto the ground. All of the bones in her body felt broken, an incredible wave of exhaustion waving over her, but she wasn't dead. Starting to replace the feeling of exhaustion was a great energy taking over the girl's limp body. It felt like Maria was floating, she managed to move her eyes around enough to see that she was actually being lifted into the air by some invisible force. Panic, an emotion she hadn't known the last time she felt, was starting to set in just as a blinding blue light started to absorb her body. The energy she felt all over her body seemed to keep growing along with the blue light radiating off of her. Then all at once the energy released and Maria was back on the cold, wet cement. However, this time her body didn't feel broken all over, there was still a wave of exhaustion hitting her, but somehow she felt like she was more energized. Looking to her hand, she noticed that she was convulsing so much, as if she had an iv feeding her with pure energy.
A large thud landed beside Maria's weak body, she tried to keep her eyes open, fighting the urge to fall unconscious. The biggest man Maria had ever seen grabbed her by her arm and pulled her limp body off the ground. The man was blurred, but she could make out long blonde hair, a very muscular build, and a red cape.
"You're shaking so bad, I need to get you to the hospital." The blonde started, "On second thought," he looked around as if realizing something, "maybe I should bring you to Stark and Banner."
"Wha- What?" Maria kept blinking, trying to get her eyes in focus.
"You knocked out all the lights for at least a mile, you're better off with Stark and Banner."
"I did what? Wh- Who are you? Let go of me, let me lay here." Maria managed to mutter out.
"I cannot leave you here, we're technically family, just distantly related. Also, you are in dire need of help."
"Family? I don't even kn- know who you are!" She felt herself loosing her fight with unconsciousness.
"Come now Maria, you're getting help."
"I never told you-" Maria trailed off, her eyes closing and her mind going dark.
