August

Who would've thought I'd write about you?

It's been a while since I've chosen words to describe you

It's probably because we haven't seen each other anymore

That I've lost all my feelings for you

It's probably because we haven't seen each other anymore

That I've realized you never felt anything for me

Did you treat every moment we had together with the same amount

Of intimacy and fervor as I did?

Did you see my eyes light up whenever I came across you -

Did you take that as a sign that I loved you?

You in that uniform you wear so piously

With that bag slung on your right shoulder.

Your silhouette - one I delightfully wrapped my arms around

Everyday back then, I thought of you.

Did you, for once, think of me?

When our bodies lay weightless and infinite on that gravel sidewalk

When you held my hand as you slept beside me

And I breathed my name on your neck like a promise

Did you know I wanted so badly to kiss you

When you told me you loved me

Before I realized you didn't mean it?

I lived in hope that, at least once in your life, you would

Did you never treat every action as illicitly and criminal as I did?

Every hand-held moment, every bite of the lip

Every summer getaway, when we locked eyes under duvet

And sat around the closed outdoor restaurant with my pinky on your thigh

Did you not see it, ever?

How could you have missed it?

When we listened to that song in August and you told me it was your favorite

I couldn't ever play it again without thinking of you

To this day, every lyric bears your name

But these days, I no longer miss you.

It's strange that I did every day when I would see you

In every afternoon you'd go away too quickly,

I'd wonder why my chest seemed like it was swallowing itself,

Wanting you back

But who am I to say that we were ever together?

When it was only a matter of time

And it couldn't have come to me any clearer -

You were never really mine.
