Betrayal

The next few days went by painstakingly slow. Even though Dianna took leave, there was some or other emergency at work that needed her attention. She arrived home after eleven for a couple of nights. I was going mad. I needed to talk to her. Where did I stand? What was this? Was it official or just a fling. Why did she look so stressed and absent minded when I did see her?

Shut up already. You'll talk to her soon enough.

I know. I  know.

"What's up, buttercup?" Anna broke my train of thought. "You look so preoccupied these days. I thought you wanted to play poker?"

"I do, it's just..." I looked at my cards again, not even remembering what I was doing.

"Mommy dearest, hey? Everything will be fine, don't worry. You know I'm fine with it, right?"

"I know... Which is weird."

"I am weird." She said matter of factly. "Why wouldn't I want to see my mom and my best friend happy? And with each other? Even better." She smiled and gave me a hug. As she hugged me, she stole a peak at my cards.

"I saw that, you cunning little viper." We both laughed and she dealt again. "Yeah I thought so. You better."

After a few rounds, Anna won, obviously. My mind was elsewhere.

"Let's go out. I'm buying you lunch. You're starting to freak me out now." She pulled me up and dragged me to the car.

She's right, what's going on?

What is this woman doing to me?

I told you, she's dangerous. She'll consume you.

I want her to.

You do, yes.

On our way I put the music on full blast. I didn't want Anna interrogating me again. I was already consumed by a woman twice my age. I have no idea why someone like her would be interested in someone like me. Surely she needs someone her own age. I'm a child.

You're senior year, you're not a child.

I am.

A child to her.

That makes it weird.

It is weird!

"Earth to Ali Cat?" We were already there, I didn't even notice. "The usual?" She was starting to seem a bit annoyed with me.

"Uh, yeah sure. Thanks Banana." I looked around while she was ordering. My heart stopped. It sank to the bottom of my stomach and I nearly hurled it out. Across the street at the coffee shop, I saw Dianna. She was sitting with someone, a woman.

They're holding hands Alison.

I can see that!

My gaze dropped to the floor as I chewed the inside of my cheek. What was I to do? They were looking very frisky.

Go over there.

No, I don't want to look like the stalkish type.

Why are you acting like this? You only had sex like once. It's not like you're in a relationship.

Right.

I looked up again. They were laughing and chatting very close to each other.

What is this stabbing pain in my chest?
