Lauren
————————————————————-'You will be mine, Lauren Everhart. I'm coming for you."
Anxiety overwhelmed me and I pressed my hands against my ears, trying to block out his voice. I could practically see the patronizing look in Adamas's purple eyes, the condescending smirk on his face stroking the flames of my rage. "Shut the fuck up!" I screamed, stumbling back against the wall.
"Lauren, what is it?" Synth was instantly by my side, her hand on my shoulder. "Are you hurt?"
"My head," I grunted, pressing the meat of my palms against my ears. "I can hear him. I can hear all of them. So many fucking voices."
This shit had to stop. I might not be able to control the fact that I'm stuck aboard an alien spaceship in the hands of a psychotic alien overlord, but I damn well should be able to control my own body. It didn't matter what my powers were or where they came from, they were mine now. When I was trapped under Adamas, I'd been able to summon them. Maybe there was a way to shut them off.
Reaching inward, I visualized the silver string from before. It stood out, tendrils of wavy light fluctuating in the darkness. I pictured my fingers grasping that silvery thread of light and pulled.
Be quiet!
To my astonishment, the deafening chorus of voices gradually hushed until finally there was blissful silence. "That's better," I sighed wi thy relief, stretching my neck until my vertebrae popped.
Just as I was about to relax, the unmistakable holler of an alarm was trumpeting just beyond the door of the motionless elevator. The Emperor still knew where we were. If we didn't think of something soon, it would only be a matter of time before they caught us. My eyes darted around the dark elevator as I hurried to think of a new plan. Maybe we try and get the elevator moving again. The only problem was, that I had no idea how to work this thing. We had no weapons, so fighting our way out was not an option.
"Lauren, would you mind giving me a boost please?" Synth's singsong voice spoke up from behind.
My brows knit together and I shot her a puzzled look. Well, I tried to, since she was a just dark silhouette moving along the walls of the elevator. "Synth . . . What are you doing?"
"Getting us a way out of here," she responded, her hands fumbling with something in the corner of the lift. "There is an escape hatch built into the top of every lift on the ship. I could use a boost, if you please."
Hope sparked in my chest and I rushed to position myself against the wall, interlocking my fingers. My back braced against the wall as I held my hands out for her. "Okay, ready."
Synth planted her boot in my palms and placed her hands on my shoulders. Pushing her up off the ground, I was surprised to find that she was even lighter than I'd anticipated. A few moments passed as she fumbled through the dark before an audible 'click' sounded.
"Got it," the teen announced triumphantly, hopping down.
Several red lights flickered on, bathing the dark chamber in ominous crimson before a black ladder sprung from the ceiling, hitting the floor with a rattle.
