"Surfeit, sur-fe-it," Hayden whispered. "Why," Simon stressed, turning over to see Hayden deep into his book. "Number one, an overabundant supply," Hayden continued, a small smile stretching onto his face. "Overabundant please," Simon requested, shifting closer to Hayden, slightly leaning into his side. "A large surplus," Hayden grinned. Hayden had memorized every word that he had ever read from that book. He'd read it at least 3 times already out of pure boredom.
If you thought he was a fairly spoiled kid with a decently perfect life, well, you would be completely wrong. Let's go back a bit.
Flashback

"HAYDEN LET'S GO, NOW," Ivan ordered, obviously panicked. He ran to pick Hayden up and ran out of the burning building. "DADDY," Hayden cried out once he realized what was going on. "He will be fine," Ivan mumbled, running into the family car, and placing Hayden in the back seat. Lilith and Simon were already in the car, Lilith in the passenger seat and Simon peacefully sleeping in the seat right next to him. "What's going on," Hayden sobbed, curling himself into a ball. "Some not nice people are just playing the fire game with daddy right now, but everything will be ok, I promise," Ivan soothed, hoping that would be enough to keep Hayden calm, at least for the time being. Once Ivan reached the safety building towards the far-out part of the city, Hayden was a slight bit calmer but still shaken.
"Why are we here," Hayden whispered, his tears finally starting to dry. "We are gonna live here for a little bit while we are waiting for your daddy to get here," Lilith lied under her breath. She felt horrible lying to him but she had no choice. She didn't even know if the poor boy's dad had made it out of the house in time but she didn't have the heart to tell him that his dad's been caught in a drug ordeal. She didn't even understand any of it.
Once Ivan and Lilith got both of the kids out of the car and into bed, they went into the kitchen and after a long moment of silence and two cups of coffee, Lilith finally spoke up. "How did this happen? Why couldn't he just pay off his debts? With all of that money, he could've paid his debts and continue to feed into his nasty addiction," Lilith sighed. She had a lot of questions, both of them did, but not enough of them could be answered. "He's never thought of anyone but himself. I don't know what you'd expect from someone like him," Ivan mumbled angrily. "Well, I expected for him to at least try to care for his children! If not Simon that at least some attempt to care for Hayden," she whispered, trying to keep her voice down, but failing. "Look, right now that bastard should be the least of our worries. What should be on our minds is how we're gonna raise Hayden. He is gonna grow up to be the world's most hated person because of his father's mistakes. He can't live in a world of hatred and it doesn't look like there is any way of fixing that, at least not right now," Ivan complained, feeling his blood start to boil. "There is nothing we can do about that. That's something only he can fix," Lilith calmly expressed, the adrenaline finally starting to wear off, leaving her with the nasty feeling of the caffeine crashing onto her. "Well it's too late for all of this thinking, I'm going to bed," Ivan tiredly groaned before dragging himself to his room. He may not have had any coffee but the sudden lack of adrenaline was setting off a trigger in him too.
