Killing him should be easy, he’s just a monster.

Then why the twisting, sickening feeling in her gut? Why the cold, damp clamminess on her palms?

He’s a monster…

Amber waded through the tangled grass toward the lake shore and out of the woods. The autumnal night wind carried a lone howl up to her as she crept down the hill. Looking ahead of her, the waters of Lake Dorian shone black under the full moon.

There’s truly no reflection at all. Dorian is the name of a vampire president, so it is befitting this cursed lake has no reflection.

No one comes here to swim, they hadn’t for many years. The pebbled shore long since washed away is now revealing sand the color of soot. The waves that grabbed at the sand begged for anyone or anything to listen to their tales of sorrow.

He sat on a ragged boulder, middle one of three, facing the glistening water.

A monster.

Amber approached with her flashlight in one hand and her custom made Beretta92FS semi-auto in the other. The beam of light was trained on the man’s back as she changed the clip in her Beretta to a 10 round magazine of silver bullets.

“I guess you’re here for the same reason he was.” The man barely spoke loud enough for her to hear him. Amber quickly realized he was pointing to a shadowy misshapen figure on the ground.

“Oh my god Eric!” gasping as she ran to the figure, “No, no, no, no, no. how could this happen? He was the best...” talking only to herself as she brushed a few stray locks of hair from his face.

“Eric, where are you? I will find you.” Running around the corner of the house, amber sees her brother hiding behind the old oak in the back yard. “Found you.” Amber runs up to the oak and tackles her brother. “You’re it!!!!” screams amber as she runs off in to the woods “find me if you can.”

“Happy Birthday Eric, now that you are 16 you can join the society. Will you join?” asks her father.

“Of course. In 3 years when Amber joins I will be the best slayer in the society.”

Amber stood up, and turned to face the man. Rage and hatred filled her eyes as the man began to speak again.

“He said he was here to cure me of my unfortunate curse of the full moon that marks me as a werewolf. Are you here to do the same little slayer? If not leave me to my hunting ground and go home to your parents.”

Amber was slowly walking up to his back gun raised and aimed at his heart. This was her test, so why had Eric been here? Was Eric trying to save her from being a slayer?

“Chris?” Amber was now standing write behind him.

“You know my name. How do you know my name?” spinning on the boulder to face her.

He looks so sad. But I have to be sure it’s him I have to look in his eyes. For my test I was hoping for an easy kill, not this. He has gone crazy, feeding on the towns people. I will kill him and then accept my place in the society.

Amber leans forward just enough to look directly into to Chris’ eyes. Blackness was all there was looking back at her, no sign of life at all.

“I’m sorry.” She whispers as she steps back and places her finger on the trigger.

“Don’t. Please I can change. Please give me another chance.” Begs Chris as he starts to stand.
