Jasper.

My eyes fluttered open slowly, smoke filling my nose and a cold night breeze hitting my skin. The forest around me creaked from the wind, branches swaying side to side. Realization hit me, last I remembered I was in my bedroom playing video games. Did I fall asleep in my chair? I scanned my surroundings. There was a campfire in front of me, two large logs on either side to use as seats, I was leaning against one on the ground. I slowly pulled myself to my feet, noticing I was still in my black jeans and black hoodie. Before I could even look any further, black smoke rose from nowhere, a huge cloud of it forming. I squinted my eyes to try and make out what was happening before me.
Another girl lay propped against the log across from me once the smoke vanished. She was much shorter than me with mid length brown hair. She was wearing short jean shorts and a spaghetti strap red tank top. I slowly stepped closer to her, now convinced it was a dream. I lightly grabbed her arm and shook it, trying to wake her. Her hazel eyes shot open and landed on me instantly, confusion filling them.
"Who the fuck are you?" She snapped, looking around frantically.
I released her arm, taking a deep breath. "Jasper."
The girl stood, looking around nervously. "And where the fuck am I?"
I looked around with her, trying to make sense of the entire thing. "I have no idea."
Arianna looked back down at me, even more confusion showing on her face.
"Your name?"
"Arianna" she replied slowly.
A few seconds after the smoke reappeared, right next to where I had woken up. Arianna let out a gasp, backing up from the smoke. Another girl, slumped against the log appeared. She had long dark hair that came down past her back. Arianna looked over at me as she realized I was equally as confused as she was. We both went to her side and and lightly touched her, shaking her gently. The girl groaned, rubbing her eyes. Arianna and I looked at each other, not knowing what the other was gonna say to this poor girl.
"Who... Where am I?"
Arianna and I looked back down at the girl.
"I'm Jasper, that's Arianna. Neither of us know where we are or why we're here." I responded as calmly as I could.
Her hazel eyes blinked as she tried to focus them. "That's interesting. I remember being... in my bed drinking. Now I'm here... am I dreaming?"
Her question created fear in both Arianna and I. I'm sure she felt as if this was a dream too, but now all of us had to process that this was real and actually happening. Trying to stay calm was going to be a harder task now. There wasn't any explanation for what was happening to them.
"No, you're not. We're real." I stated blankly, staring off into the woods.
Arianna nodded slowly. "I thought I was dreaming up until this moment."
The girls eyes widened and pointed behind us to the other log where Arianna had showed up at. I turned to face it, watching smoke appear again. I closed my eyes for a moment, wondering if we were all just dead and this was the afterlife. Why would we all just appear here? How did any of it make any sense? A small Asian girl, in sweatpants and a baggy t-shirt, who looked sound asleep, appeared in the spot beside where Arianna had been before. This girl looked as if she had been sleeping when she was taken here.
"What the hell just happened?" The girl between Arianna and I gasped
"That's how you showed up too." Arianna answered, her eyes not leaving the sleeping girl.
Our voices seemed to wake the girl up, her eyes landing on us through her glasses. She didn't say anything at first, just looked around, before trying to get comfy and go back to sleep. I knew she thought she was dreaming and was probably just ignoring the situation at hand. We all knew she needed to be awake.
"Wake up, you aren't dreaming." I called out to her.
The girls eyes reopened, trying to focus on us again. "So you're telling me this is real?"
Arianna nodded beside me. "I can barely accept it either and I'm still hoping it's a dream."
"I don't believe it, I just think I'm having a drunk dream." The girl between us piped up.
I ran my fingers through my hair, trying to think straight. So, this is real. We are actually here and this is really happening to us. Why am I not freaking out? Why am I still so calm? How am I going to get out of this? Is there a way out of this?
"Earth to Jasper! We kind of have to talk this one out, come up with a plan?" Arianna said, breaking me out of my thoughts by grabbing my shoulder.
I nodded in agreement. "Lets all sit, gather our thoughts."
We all sat on the logs, where we all had appeared from.
"I think we should all introduce ourselves first." I decided, "I'm Jasper. I was playing video games and I ended up here."
Arianna sighed. "I'm Arianna, and I was doing my dishes when I ended up here."
"I'm Cat," The drunk girl stated. "I was drinking sad and alone in bed."
The sleepy girl glanced at us wearily. "I'm Nickole and I was sleeping."
There was a pause, none of us knowing where to go next. The sound of the forest was almost calming if it wasn't under such scary circumstances. However the silence didn't last when another female voice came from the side of us, between the two logs.
"Welcome." We all snapped our heads to see a dark skinned girl with glasses. "This is all very confusing, I know. I was brought here once randomly too. I'm Claudette. I have made a deal with the entity to stay here and make sure everyone else who met my fate, would have me at least as a guide."
"The what?" Cat asked, her eyebrows raised with suspicion.
"The entity." Claudette replied calmly. "A being higher than any of us who set up this sick game to harvest souls. You have a chance however, to make it out alive. You just have to complete the trials and you are free."
I took a deep breath. "And if we don't?"
"You will die." She answered. "I know this is scary and confusing, the faster you accept it, the faster we can start getting yourselves ready for what's to come."
The four of us glanced at each other in silent agreement and looked back at Claudette who took it as her sign to continue.
"Once every two days, you will be thrown into a random place with two objectives. Fix five generators and make it out alive." Claudette paused before she continued. "Each trial will have a different killer or sometimes the killer will repeat. You four aren't the only ones going through the trials, so sometimes the killers are preoccupied with others in other trials."
"Killers?" Arianna interrupted, her jaw nearly hitting the ground.
Claudette nodded. "Yes. They all have different strengths, speeds and knowledge. I could never prepare you for what each can do. There isn't enough time. I can just explain the basics."
We all nodded slowly. The idea of it being a dream seeming a lot nicer now.
"Generators are all about putting the right colored wires together. Be gentle, take your time. If you mess it up, the thing will blow up and obviously will alert the killer on your location. Get all five done and you can open the escape gates." Claudette looked between the four of us. "Patching each other up should be self explanatory. You probably will get cut with something at some point. Just remember to help each other out. You can also heal yourself, just more efficient when someone else does it at first."
We all nodded.
"Now if the killer catches you... you will be placed onto a hook. You can only be taken off twice before that's the end for you and the entity takes your soul. You will experience a lot of pain during these trials and I hope you all can handle this pain." Claudette finishes, before the smoke took her, vanishing before our eyes.
We all sat in silence for a minute, trying to wrap our heads around the crazy explanation we had received.
"Can I believe it's a dream yet?" Nickole asked, almost at a whisper.
"I wish." Arianna replied. "Is this the hunger games or something?"
A small laugh escaped all of us. None of us fully processing anything that just happened.
"When I see it, I'll believe it." Cat shrugged, still in denial.
I looked at them, a sense of protectiveness washing over me as I realized that these lives were in my hands. If I screw anything up, it could cost any of them their lives. Cat stood up, looking around again, seeming to see something when her gaze paused. I followed her gaze and saw tents appearing with the blank smoke around the fire. First a red one, a blue one, a purple one and then a pink one. We all knew that these were for us.
"I'll take the blue one." Nickole shrugged, us all knowing she just wanted to go back to sleep.
"I will go with red." Cat chirped up excitedly.
"Unless you want pink, I'll take that one." Arianna said to me.
I nodded. "I can take purple."
We walked towards our chosen tents, unzipping the front and crawling inside. A sleeping bag was sprawled out on the ground with a blanket and a pillow. On the other corner sat a backpack. I scooted over to it and opened it to find snacks, paper and pencils. Shockingly we got to have some form of entertainment in this cruel place. I took some of the food out and ate it, before slowly crawling into my sleeping bag.
I stared up at the top of the tent for awhile. My mind racing with everything that had happened that night. I wondered how my cat was doing back at home and if anyone would notice any of us were gone. Surely police would be called and a missing persons file would be opened for each of us. However anything is possible at the moment and I couldn't tell whether or not if this was truly happening to me. Somehow sleep caught up to me and I drifted off, feeling the darkness surrounding me.
