Sophie was sitting in her room, staring at the maps Mr Forkle had told her to study so she could try to figure out the Neverseen's next move when she realised that she had know idea what she was doing, other than distracting herself from the Keefe Problem and his Horrible Parents. Which wasn't working. Standing up, Sophie tried to think about where Mr Forkle might be at the moment, but the only place that came to mind was the hobbit-hole of an office he'd taken her to before she became a regent. Yanking open her curtains, she didn't waste any time in throwing herself out the window, at Sandor's horror.  She closed her eyes and concentrated, splitting open the void seconds before she hit the ground. When  Sophie opened her eyes, she was standing on the side of a lush green hill, with a round red door cut into the side. She quickly opened the door and stepped in. Mr Forkle wasn't there, so Sophie decided to sit down in the armchair across from his desk and wait. As she was sinking into the cushy chair, Sophie noticed a pile of folders on his desk, all of them looking like top secret government files. Not wanting to be rude, she cleared her mind and sat back studying the grassy slopes out the window. But then, in the corner of her eye, she caught the words PROJECT MOONLARK on the top sheet, and, attention snagged, she gingerly reached over and started reading the document. On it were the words PROJECT M. NO.1. Number 1? What did that mean?! Even more curious now, Sophie pulled the sheet out fully and read the rest. Below the title, there was a picture of a 20ish woman under the name Nialle Barlowe , from a small island called Australia in the Southern Hemisphere.

This is what she looks like:

After quickly glancing at the image Sophie continued on down the page

After quickly glancing at the image Sophie continued on down the page. Next were her abilities. The girl - Nialle - was a  Flasher, Inflictor, Polyglot, Conjurer and Vanisher. Which was the same amount of abilities as Sophie! Plus, she realised as she checked back with her photo, Nialle had Gold eyes, not blue!

Number 2 also had a girl, this time about age 18, called Zelie Lacigne from France, also had five abilities, which included Telepath, Voiciferator, Beguiler, Hydro-kinetic and Enhancer. And just like Nialle, Zelie had striking greeny-gold eyes.

Zelie looked like this:

Were all of them like this? Sophie leafed through the third and fourth, and, sure enough, the titles were PROJECT M. NO.3 & NO.4, a 17 year old Italian boy called Pietro and a Latina girl Sophie's age, Adalia.

This is Pietro:

And this is Adalia:

But, reading through the files, Sophie saw that on all of them, there was a text box labelled PROJECT SUCCESS. And the first four, the ones with foreign names on them, all had the words PROJECT FAIL, stamped on them. Did that mean these people were dead?  But the last one had her name and picture on it. And the box, instead of the harsh red stamps, there was a neat scrawl saying; PROJECT SUCCESS. Wait what? Was she like, what all off them had been created for? To be the Moonlark? Sophie supposed that it made sense, had she really expected that the Black Swan had gotten it right the first time? But she didn't understand why Mr Forkle had kept it a secret. Shaken and confused, Sophie ran outside and light-leaped back to Havenfield to talk to Keefe about this. But when she got there, Sophie's attention was immediately drawn to the crushed flowers making up her carpet. Freezing, she slowly traced the path the footsteps made, leading up to her bed. Where a crisp white envelope was sitting on the covers. Dread filling her, Sophie carefully made her way up to her bed and pried the letter from the pillows, slipped her thumb under the tab and peeled it apart. Inside was a sheet of paper. Fully expecting another ransom note, Sophie's heart stopped when she saw Keefe's messy scribble filling the page. She followed her eyes down it, eyes filling with tears at the horribly sweet words and terrible meanings. By the time she got the bottom, she had a hand clamped over her mouth and tears streaming down her face. How could Keefe betray her like this?!

Throwing down the wretched note, she turned and collapsed on her bed, stuffing a pillow in her face as she sobbed.
