Chapter 2
The doe had been a small one, visibly weaker and slower than the rest of her group. At first, I doubted any chance of catching her due to the fear of her escaping into in the street where I couldn't show myself but after following her a bit deeper into the trees, it became blissfully easier.
When I was young, hunting animals had grossed me out. My dad would take me to the woods to practice, but, being the stubborn little she wolf I was, I threw a tantrum each time which would scare off the prey. I knew what I was doing and soon enough, my dad caught on too. He eventually distributed punishments if I didn't hunt like I was supposed to. As the years went on, I grew to be pretty good at it.
I woke up early and restless this morning yet again, unable to go back to sleep so, I had decided to do some morning hunting before hitting the grind for the day. I was anxious to get even more distance between me and my old home. My wallet was hanging around my neck like a collar to hold my keycard and my clothes were hung on a branch near where I had entered the woods.
I had just finished up my catch and was about to head back to the hotel when I heard a deep growl from behind me.
I spun around quickly, being taught to never leave my back to an enemy.
Two large wolves, both with quite dark coats, stood examining me.
"You're trespassing into a packs territory that you don't belong to." One stated. "This is a crime."
I glanced around on instinct. I honestly hadn't known I had entered another territory. I must be on the very edges because the scent of it was near nonexistent. The fact that I hadn't been able to tell where a territory started made me upset. Back home, we did frequent runs to make sure the boundaries were clearly set and rouges knew not to come this way. It wasn't my fault that I wasn't aware.
"I wasn't aware I had crossed a line. I'm only passing through and am leaving currently." I said cautiously, taking a step backwards.
The wolf that hadn't spoken now let out a vicious snarl that stopped me in my tracks. "You've been here since yesterday and still haven't just passed through," His tone was menacing. "You're a rouge and you're on our lands. I told you, that's a crime here. Now you will come with us to speak to the alpha and he will decide what happens from there."
The thought of seeing another Alpha frightened me. He could have me killed for trespassing or worse, send me home to Alpha Walter and my parents. I couldn't let that happen. After running away my situation would only be made worse. I would be punished severely by my father and would bring shame to my pack. Alpha Walter could call off the deal and instead declare war for my offensive act towards him. I could put my friends and family in danger. They would be hurt because of me.
These thoughts all rushed into my mind at once, making me dizzy and suddenly skittish. Without thinking and immediately regretting it, I ran.
I didn't get very far when I felt sharp fangs sink into my hind leg and a heavy body tackle me to the ground.
A pained howl escaped me before the darkness of pathetic fainting took over my wolfs form and I passed out.
The soreness of my limbs could be felt even before I began coming to my senses. It was the familiar soreness of being forced into the desired form by a high ranking wolf. My dad used it on me over and over, making me shift painfully back and forth between human and wolf, when I had done something shameful. He also used it on my mother for the same reason.
Besides the soreness, something else was prominent in me. A feeling of excitement and warmth. An electrifying buzz that I felt mentally and physically. My wolf spirit inside me was pacing, waiting for me to open my eyes. I was coming to my senses and my skin was tingling, telling me something was very.... right.
My eyes fluttered open and I groaned at the brightness of the light above. I turned my head to the side to avoid it, leading my eyes to fall on a face that was very close to mine.
I yelped slightly and jerked my upper body away in surprise, propping myself up on my elbow.
The face, now a full body, kneeling beside the couch I seemed to be laying on, stared at me in concern. "Are you alright? Does it hurt?"
I blinked. This man, right before me, was my mate. I took in his features in awe, greatly admiring how handsome he was. As a young wolf, I always dreamed of the day I found my mate and how he would look like. Not once did I ever expect him to be this amazing.
His eyes were the first things I saw, a pale gray with a darker outer lining that reminded me of a clouded day. He had dirty blonde hair that swept slightly to the side, giving him a playful and approachable look. His skin was naturally tanned by the sun and his arms, toned with enough muscle to give him a sexy look but not so much that it became douche-y. And then his lips, pink and soft looking, making me want to lean in and...
I snapped out of my silent daze and forced my gaze to go back to his eyes. He was beautiful.
He turned to two guys standing behind him that I hadn't noticed before. "Why isn't she speaking? Did you hurt her throat?" His voice sounded like a warning.
"No, Alpha, we didn't." The shorter one replied, averting his eyes.
"Alpha?" I repeated, not even realizing I had spoken.
My mate's head snapped back to me. He let out a breath and smiled softly. "I'm an alpha, yes."
"You're my... mate." I stated the obvious, stupidly. This was a lot to take in and oddly, all I wanted to now was to be in his arms. "I don't even know you." I whispered, not meaning for him to hear.
He frowned. "Yes, but I want to know you, I want to know everything about you." His eyes went down to my leg. "But first I want to make sure that you're okay. Is it hurting? I can grab you some pain medication?"
My heart nearly melted. "Ah, no thank you, I can barely feel it." I recalled how the wolves in the woods had attacked me.
I looked at the two men standing behind my mate. It was them. One was tall with dark hair and a posture of power. He had a ranking. Beta maybe? The other was shorter and obviously younger with brown shaggy hair to his shoulders. My eyes narrowed at them suspiciously.
The younger boy noticed me examining him and stepped forward. "Luna, I apologize for what happened in the woods. It was my first run and I didn't know what to do."
"Don't apologize, you did the right thing. We didn't know it was Aarons mate. She was just a rouge." The darker haired one snapped at him.
My mate, Aaron, growled in his throat at them. "No, let him apologize, he injured his Luna. You both did."
They both backed down immediately.
"Can I know your name?" He asked me softly. "I'm Aaron."
"I'm Tambrey." I said, hating that I could feel myself blushing. I tried sitting all the way up but the soreness hit me hard, forcing me back down all the way. A dizziness overcame me again. I closed my eyes.
"Tambrey," I felt Aaron touch my arm and his worry for me radiate. "What happened?"
"Luna?" One of the boys said uncertainly.
Aaron growled. "What did you do to her?"
Before I could protest, letting Aaron know that it was just the forced shifting and its effect on my body, my consciousness seemed to roll heavily away, and for the second time that day, I fainted into a dream like state filled with thoughts on my alpha. My mate.
