Routine
The monotonus sound of the beep flew through the speaker and echoed through her room. The young girl's eyes reluctantly opened as she rubbed the palm of her hand against her face, a short yawn escaping her mouth soon after. She stetted her self and cracked a few bones before looking at where the sound came from— it was the wake up call. All the patients had to be strictly woken up at seven o'clock in the morning, sharp. This had always been like this. It was her daily routine.
Sounds of footsteps echoed through the hall due to the patients coming out of their respective rooms. She gathered her sleepy self and walked outside of her room and stood in-front of it. A lady that was in her mid-forties walked with her back slightly arched, head high, and her hands behind her back. She was the warden for this section. The warden was in charge of the patients and if they obey the rules of the institution and if anyone abides that, there will be consequences.
Although, people do get out of these simply by bragging and kissing asses. If their families are prestigious and have a high reputation, a simple lecture will do the job. That is where the girl came from. A high and a wealthy family. Many people in the institution never had a wealthy family. They were sick in the head. Criminals.
She felt that she knew she wasn't like that. She didn't belong here. But the constant memories that flooded her mind kept telling her otherwise. The other patients at the institution grew a hatred towards her, making her life worse than it already is. She had no comfort.
"Patient 036." The warden held her head while slapping the edge of the other patient's room with her cane. "Get up."
Those two words made everyone at the sight weak in the knees. They weren't the ones getting scolded yet they were still scared at the strictness of the warden.
"I'm not going to be treated like this." The patient spoke up, not getting up from her bed.
Since Patient 036's room was across Patient 043, she could clearly see what was happening and she squirmed at the sight. She wanted to show little to no emotion, but failed to do so and the braveness of the girl in front of her and at the thought of all the consequences that would happen due to her bold actions.
"Patient 036, get up." She spoke again, this time making it subtly a harsh tone indicating that she was warning the young lady. After saying those few words the warden stayed silent the whole time yet it felt as if she was screaming the whole time. The lady waited for her response, but all she got in response was the bitter expression on her face. The young girl stood up and slowly yet boldly walked to her.
"I'm not a fucking patient. I have a name. So don't call me one." It took every bit of courage to get those words out of her mouth and she regretted every single bit of it.
The warden's face stayed neutral as she looked at the shivering yet courageous girl. The warden then looked at the two guards at the end of the room signaling them to come to the scene and they simultaneously walked to the girl. They grabbed her by each of the arms which made her widen her eyes.
Her screams and cries of help ran through the place as she was dragged away from the corridor leaving the rest of the patients in shock. This was definitely a change in routine. The girl had never seen something like this. The rebellious act made her shocked even though it would never possibly happen to her. Her mouth agape in shock, she was startled by the sound of the warden's cane hitting the floor.
"If anyone of you disobey any of the rules and will not comply with us, there will be severe consequences. So take this as an example." She spoke, her back never hunching and her head never looking down. She spoke with utmost confidence. "Get in line, quickly. You're late for your daily routine."
