Darwin returned home from a date with Carrie, smiling as he opened the front door.

"Hey, I'm back!"

Nicole, who was doing the dishes, turned to look at him and smiled.

"Oh hey, honey! How was your date?"

"Really good! We watched the new Nightmare on Elmore Street then we hung out at her house for a while."

She raised her eyebrow. "I thought you didn't like horror movies."

He shrugged. "I've gotten a lot better with them since I've started watching more of them with Carrie. They're actually pretty enjoyable now."

"Oh, really? Well, I'm happy you and Carrie have something you both enjoy doing." She smiled.

He giggled. "It's really cute how excited and happy she gets afterwards. She gushes about how good all the scares and scenes were, and how much she enjoyed them. I don't think she even realises she's doing it."

He smiled and sighed. "Just knowing she's so happy makes me happy."

"Awww, that's so adorable! I'm glad you and Carrie get on so well. You two always do look so happy together." She smiled.

He grinned and gave a sigh of pleasure. "Yeah, she's great..." He'd pause, thinking about her for a moment before snapping out of it.

"So uh, anyway, do you know where Gumball is?"

"He's upstairs in your room I think."

"Alright, thanks, Mrs Mom!"

"No problem!"

He decided he'd hang out with Gumball for a while whilst he could before he had to go and meet Penny for their date.

He was about to open the door when he heard Gumball on the phone talking to someone, presumably Penny.

"What do I think of him? Not gonna lie, I know Dad was just trying to do something nice, and I appreciate it, really I do, but I wish he'd just never bought him. He's just one more mouth we have to feed and we were perfectly happy without him."

Darwin held his fins over his mouth to stop a gasp from escaping. H-him? It sounded like he was talking about...no...surely...surely Gumball couldn't be talking about him right? Then again, who else could he be talking about?

"Yeah, he's kinda cute I guess but I wouldn't really care if something happened to him, he's just some dumb pet. In fact, most of the time I forget he even exists.

Darwin started to tear up. He couldn't believe what he was hearing, from his own brother, his best friend. Pet...? Is that..is that really all Gumball thought of him as?! A...a pet!?

"Honestly, I'd just get rid of him If I could but.." He sighed "Oh well, I guess I'm just burdened with looking after him."

Darwin's heart shattered. Gumball wanted to...to get rid of him!? After all these wonderful years he'd had with him, the person he considered his best friend, his brother, never actually cared about him!? C-considered him a burden? Wished he'd never...never been adopted!?
