P.S. i have no idea how school systems in the USA work so just go with the backstory thing

You had known Maria for what felt like forever. Ever since that time she first defended you in school sports. You weren't the greatest, especially when it came to dodgeball. The kids in your grade would always get you out first because they collectively labelled you an easy target. Well, that was until Maria joined your class in 3rd grade. You never knew why but she would often defend you (the first time being in a sports dodgeball game) against anyone that even attempted to upset/hurt you. The two of you soon became inseparable, spending all time possible practically glued to each other's side.

Now, working as S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, you both remained close with both of you hiding from each other that your platonic feelings had slowly grown into something more. You were both terrified that the way you felt for each other would ruin the friendship you had. You were slightly more scared though with Maria being one of your only four friends and you only ever really talking to her. The other three you spoke to but only for work or if you needed something from one another which was never often. You always tried to impress Maria whenever you were with her (in fact, everything you did was for her) and it never went unnoticed even if you thought it did: she would do the same but was slightly more subtle and you, not quite the expert when it came to friendships and romance, thought it was just Maria being nice. Your suspicion that it was more than platonic increased when you realised she was never 'nice' to others. After years of useless yearning for her, and a few drinks at the bar round the corner one night, you sent her a message:
