You've just watched your parents get killed in your own home by angry overly religious assholes. You watched them die, and you watched these people search for you in the upstairs of your house, planning to kill you as well. You check to make sure they're gone, that you can't help, and grab your mother's necklace and your father's handkerchief and stuffed them in your pockets before sneaking out. Quite literally running for your life.
You run to a mansion, hands and clothes bloody, and bang on the glass doors, screaming for help. You notice the doors have an umbrella on each, but you were more so trying to get help than anything else.
The door was opened by a.. chimp?
Confused and scared you just screamed to the monkey and into the mansion, short of breath from running,

"Please! I need help! They're going to kill me!"

He moved aside and let you in, inside you see 7 people all gathering in the room you just walked in. You can barely breathe, scared, confused, and overwhelmed.
You're standing before these people, bloody, and hyperventilating.

"Wh...Where am I? Can they find me here? I've never left home before. Who are you all? Can you help me? I.. I don't know what to do!"

You suddenly blurt out, you feel like you could pass out right there, right then.
One of the men of the group start interrogating you, asking your name, where you're from, why you're here, why you're bloody, and all kinds of questions that you can't much focus on. When you don't answer, because you can't even breathe steady enough to get a word out, even just your name, he holds a knife to your throat, demanding answers.
You squeal in fear and surprise at this gesture.
"I.. I.."
You try to get words out, to no avail.
You hear a quiet, calm voice.

"Klaus, I don't think they can breathe, say something. Diego can't hear me, you have to say something!"

You're confused, the man holding a knife to your throat, assumably Diego, doesn't seem to be deaf or unable to hear, why can't he hear him?

"Wh...why can't he.. he hear you?" You ask, through heavy breaths.

"What? Why can't who hear who? Nobody else said anything, what drugs are you on? What kind of basket case are you, huh?" He interrogates further, getting the tip of his knife closer to your throat.
After a moment, a man, feminine and gentle looking, speaks up.

"Guys, Ben. Ben talked. He told me to tell you to go easy on them, they can't breathe. He mentioned Diego can't hear him."

Diego looks at him and backs from you a bit. Knife away from your throat.
The feminine man walks towards you, looking at you curiously.

"Hey, I'm Klaus, I want to help you, okay? Breathe. What's your name?"
He talks gently, in an attempt to calm you.

"I.. I'm (Y/N)."
You say through heavy, shaky breaths.

He nods calmly looking at you. Trying to maintain eye contact with you.
You feel calmed by his tone and presence.

"My parents.. they were killed. I've never left the house. I was homeschooled my whole life. They never made me get a job. I never left. But the religious men were going to kill me too. They know they raised me as a witch too.. I... Klaus, please don't let them find me. Can they get me here?"

He looks around the room and then smiles at you.

"Oh, (y/n), you're very safe here, I promise."
You're calmed by his response.

They all invite you to sit at the bar as Grace, their mother, cleans you up and they explain the Umbrella Academy. Their abilities, Ben, the family, everything. Including why Five looked so much younger. Apparently, they stopped the apocalypse, small price to pay, I suppose, in exchange for everybody's existing.

They decided you can stay in the mansion. Klaus offered to share his room with you. That was very nice of him. He figured that you wouldn't want to be alone, and you can both see ghosts. Klaus was very interested in how powerful of a witch you are. You had never thought much of it. You thought it was more common. Apparently not.

The more they all talk, the more you realize that, fuck, you've got a lot to learn about the world and how it works.
