SHE DIDN'T SHED A TEAR WHEN THE KING DIED; not a scream, not a wish, not even a whisper. She didn't even attend his funeral, her own brother's funeral. Rather she stayed in the shadows something she found oddly comforting, watching from afar the people of the town paying their respects. They cried for him, someone they never knew, and Elowyn couldn't help but pity them for they hadn't the slightest clue of who the man they were crying for actually was. She never truly thought of him as family—yes, they may have shared blood but she always felt alone in this world. Aside from Hades she never truly had anyone.

Standing on that same hill all those years back looking over the desolate graveyard an apathetic expression lay across her face. Her hand sat lazily on the neck of Hades playing with his dark mane as he ate the dew-ridden crisp grass, a light wind blowing some loose strands of hair and ebony cloak.

Wasn't it supposed to be easier? Her monster was subdued, yet, she still felt confined. Was he truly the villain of her story or was she the villain all along? His voice was a constant in her memory;

"You are lucky we saved you." "You do know what would happen to... your kind if you were found out about?" "Mother left you for good reasons, you truly are just a monster."

He would spit; he would hiss; he would sneer, but what was most chilling was that he was self-possessed. He truly had a knack for making someone feel completely unworthy while still plastering a smile as if his tongue couldn't slice through paper. He thought of her as a monster and part of her was starting to believe he was right, however, that didn't make the sting hurt any less.

The sun had just begun to peak over the horizon, the rise beaming on her face she felt the heat against her fair skin. Taking in the cool air, her lungs expanded and skin prickled as she exhaled leaving a puff cloud in the early air. Mornings were peaceful, with no people to hide from just the calming sound of the birds and the cool breeze across her skin just crisp enough to leave the softest of roses on her cheeks. The sound of horses bustling down the path pulled her from her thoughts, all while people were being hauled in a carriage shortly behind.

A sigh passed her lips, "Are you ready to leave my boy?" Saying as she rubbed his neck, turning to look at him.

Her noble steed was almost as dark as a moonless night, his raven mane and tail swished in the wind. Atop his fur sat dingy off-white spots and it flecked all over his upper body. Elowyn was all but a wee child when she met Hades, his feeble legs just getting used to his own body weight not being born more than a few minutes prior. Taking a few wobbly steps he fell landing his head perfectly in her lap. A giggle softly left the girls belly. His eyes were large and filled with so much hope, and in that moment she knew this horse was going to be her rock—her stability in this broken place she called her world.
