Chapter 1: Clocking In
The G.U.N. facility smelled like sterilized guilt. Bleached floors. Buzzing lights. The hum of machines that never slept.
Shadow the Hedgehog had seen warzones more inviting.
His boots echoed off the tile as he stepped inside the main hallway, crimson eyes already narrowed. Beside him, Rouge gave a small, exaggerated yawn, wings tucked neatly behind her back as she adjusted her communicator.
"Any idea what this 'urgent assignment' is about?" she asked. "Because if it's just another Wild Rebellion glitching through the perimeter sensors, I'm billing overtime."
Shadow didn't answer. He didn't need to. The look on his face said he already knew this wasn't routine.
They were led by a tight-lipped intern—young, fresh-faced, already trembling in the presence of Mobius's most unpredictable agent. A door slid open with a mechanical hiss, revealing the General's office—glass walls overlooking what looked like a pristine, blindingly white containment wing.
In the middle of it, sat the world's most famous prisoner.
Shadow's breath caught—just a little.
Sonic.
He was barely recognizable. Slumped in the corner of a padded white room, eyes dull, fur grayed at the edges, body restrained but loose like a puppet with the strings cut. No smirk. No spark.
Just a shell.
Rouge muttered, "You've got to be kidding me."
The General folded his hands behind his back and stepped forward. "You're looking at the result of Mobius's greatest failure."
"You mean yours," Shadow said coldly.
The General's smile didn't falter. "We call him patient 0-7. The public thinks he's undergoing rehabilitation. In reality—he's feral. Dangerous. He's refused to speak for weeks. Not a word. We've tried medication. Isolation. Sensory deprivation. Nothing cracks him."
Rouge raised an eyebrow. "So what? You want us to babysit him?"
The General's gaze sharpened. "Not babysit. Reclaim."
He tapped a holopanel. A projection appeared: images of Dark Sonic—black fur, glowing white eyes, Mobians around him twisted into corrupted shadows, cities overturned like dominoes. Sonic screaming. Sonic laughing. Sonic collapsing.
"We want to tame the thing inside him," the General said, voice like steel. "Extract what we can. 'Fix' what's broken. Then parade him back to the world as a success story. Good PR. Bigger funding."
Rouge scoffed. "You're turning his breakdown into a paycheck."
"We're offering him redemption," the General replied. "Whether he wants it or not."
Then he looked at Shadow.
Dead-on.
"You're the only one who might get through to him. You've faced this darkness before. You've been it. We need you to train him, talk to him, tear him down if you have to. But bring him back."
"And if I don't?" Shadow asked, arms folded.
The General smiled again. "Then he rots in that room until the public forgets him entirely."
The silence between them stretched thin as wire.
Rouge glanced sideways. "Well? Gonna play therapist now, Shadow?"
Shadow's voice came low. Controlled. "...I'll do it."
"Excellent," the General said, clapping once. "Session starts tomorrow morning. I suggest you rest. You'll need it."
As they were escorted out, Shadow stopped once—just briefly—to look down into the white room again. Sonic hadn't moved. But his eyes flickered, just once, toward the glass.
For a split second, Shadow thought he saw something.
Recognition.
Or maybe it was just the reflection.
