Hero's POV
I just had the best Summer ever! I went with my parents and siblings to Cannes, France and just enjoyed life basically.. But that can't last so here I am back on campus in London, my lovely hometown.
I go to my dorm room first and start to unpack all of the things that I brought back to college. I had the same room as I had last year but my roommate dropped out which meant I had the room for myself.. for now because it might change soon knowing this school.
As soon as I finished unpacking I checked the reading list that I received for Literature class... damn they gave so many books this year. I head to the library and start looking for all the books that I needed for my first few literature classes. As soon as I got most of them I look around to see if there's a spot free to sit down and enjoy my first book of the year... and yes I do enjoy reading actually!
I look around and see a spot on the couch next to a girl with brown long hair reaching her shoulders and totally being into her book. "Hey, is it okay to sit next to you?'' I ask the girl from behind.. I frown when she doesn't respond thinking she was just lost in her book and I repeated the same question but still no respond from the girl. I tap her shoulder trying to get some kind of reaction as she simply doesn't respond to me. The girls turns around and I repeat my question again "is it okay if I sit next to you''. The girl looks at me with a confused face and I saw her thinking and then standing up and rushing to the door. I'm confused as hell and decide to follow her and grab her arm finding her reaction a bit odd. "Hey, are you alright?'' I ask her calmly and I see her processing her thoughts before responding "I'm fine, can you please let go of me?'' She asks irritated, so I immediately let go of her arm. "I'm sorry, I just asked if I could sit next to you and then you ran." "Oh, I'm sorry! I just zoned out totally while reading." She apologizes, but I can see there's something different going on that just being zoned out, Before I can respond to her she tells me she's leaving. I am left behind with quite some thoughts.. Who is that girl.. and why did she act if I tried to attack or something. I decide to go back to the old couch and start reading Romeo and Juliet.Nina's POV
Well great job at making a fool of yourself on the first day Nina... just man up and tell them you're deaf, I mean you can't run from everyone and leave them confused.. Oh and what's wrong with telling them you're deaf? It's your whole identity and you have always been so proud of it! I think to myself while returning to my dorm room.
I get inside and see that Lola's still not be back from her friends and I take the opportunity to FaceTime my brother. I get comfy on my bed and call Callum who picks up as soon as I call him. "Hey little sis, how's it all going with your adult life?" He signs with a chuckle and I sigh "Well I have a nice roommate, but I just miss all of you so bad" I sign back trying to hold back my tears "aww c'mon silly, you just have to get used to everything, oh and remember in a few weeks I will be there to support you and annoy you all the time" he laughs.
Callum is attending the same college as me but he is a sophomore and is now in Spain for a soccer training camp.
"Yeah I know, but I would have liked for you to be here on my first day and show me around." "I know, I know but have you been in your room all day or have you checked out campus already on your own?'' He asks a bit worried that I locked myself in my room. "No, I have been to the cafetaria with Lola, my roommate... and then I checked out the library and sat there for a while reading a book." I smile and think back of what happened at the library and my smile changes to a serious face. "What happened there, did anyone make fun of you?" Callum asks. "No one made fun of me Cal, I just read there and then left." I quickly sign. I see his expression is still a bit mad "Remember little one, being deaf doesn't mean you can't do things on your own so just head outside and make some friends...And if anyone bothers you, just tell them that you have a big bro coming in a week or so to kick their ass." He laughs and I laugh along. "Thanks Cal, I'm gonna head to the nearest coffee place and get myself a nice black coffee, oh and don't kiss too many Spanish girls!" I smirk and we say goodbye to each other and hang up the phone.
I decide to change into a skinny jeans and a nice warm sweater before heading to the nearest coffee shop. I head inside and order a large black coffee and head back to my room to go to sleep. The next morning I woke up and had to orientate for a while where I was before realizing today was my first day of classes. I do a simple make-up and get all the books that I needed for that day and head out to my first class which is literature. When I arrive at the right classroom I get in and I'm surprised at seeing a sign language interpreter in there... Wait I told my college I was gonna try without one first but they went ahead and got one anyway, well that's nice but also rude for not telling me. I walk in and walk up to the interpreter "are you here for me?'' I sign to her. "Nina Wilson?" She asks and I nod "yeah they called me in to interpret all your classes." "Oh okay, I told them I wanted to try without an interpreter first... but it's okay...class will be easier like this" I give a faint smile and sit in a front seat on the left side so people won't focus on the interpreter as much as when she would be right next to the teacher. Everyone starts getting into the classroom and give some weird looks to me and the interpreter and I start feeling extremely uncomfortable.. this was exactly what I didn't want to happen. As soon as all people arrived the teacher starts her lecture "Good morning everyone my name is Mr. Brontes and I will be your literature teacher for this year. As you can see we also have a sign language interpreter here for one of your classmates who is deaf but please focus on me and not the interpreter." He says and the continues.. until the same boy came in that I met at the library. "Good morning Mr. Tiffin, could you please come on time the next class? Thank you very much and take a seat" He says before the boy can answer. He looks for a spot and there was one spot left.. off course right next to me. He sits down and looks at me with a huge grin on his face "Hello mystery girl" He says and I am able to read his lips this time. "Hiya." Is all I can say before the teacher gives us a stare and I focus on the interpreter again and make some notes. While the class continues I can feel the boy staring at me and the interpreter and I just pray class ends soon. "Okay class, so for the next class I want you all to read chapter 2 till 8" The teacher finished and everyone gets up from their seats. I wave goodbye to the interpreter and head out. I see the boy waiting for me at the end off the hallway and he waves.
Authors note:
