Those words, they felt like a double-edged sword in my chest, twisting and turning until I could no longer inhale.

~[TRACY]~
I was observing her, and despite myself, I felt sorry for her.Word had spread like wild fire about her punishment. She was only allowed to sit for the midterms, and then commence her one month long suspension.
She walked around with slow drags of her feet, her hips now lacked the sway she used to force, eyes always fixed on the floor.
I dragged my eyes to her head and I almost hated myself for the amused chuckle that escaped my lips. There was not one single strand of hair on her head; what my people would call gorimakpa, afari korondo, clear scalp.
Esther Bolarinwa looked miserable, and that's just putting it nicely.
But the executives' verdict for Preye wasn't as lenient. She had already begun her suspension of two months, and was to joggle both make-up tests and exams whenever she resumed. The same thing applied to Kenneth, the juniour she had banged at the pool.
I couldn't help it, I grimaced at the image that crossed my mind.
The chime of my phone jolted me out of my thoughts, I patted around my torso until I found it in my blazer pocket.
It was Chris ringing me up, I took the call.
"Are you still in school?" He went straight to his inquiry.
"Yes, Chris." I glanced at my watch. 4:10. "But I'll soon be on my way though. Any problem?"
"No, not at all." I heard him exhale. "I just wanted to inform you that I've gotten a contact at the Ikoyi Hills Asylum, I should have information about your mother by this evening. She goes by Jadesola Adenuga, right?"
"Yes, yes." It was easy to detect my sudden excitement from my voice. "That's her name, Chris."
"Then I'll get back to you this evening. Trust me, Tee."
"I do, I do." I told my friend in all honesty, and expressed my gratitude, "Thank you."
Without a 'you're welcome', he said a simple, "Later," and dropped the call.
The ray of hope Chris's words had ignited came with calmness too. I couldn't help the wide grin that curled my lips as I approached my car, my steps even had a skip to them now.
Baami did not miss my bright mood when I arrived home, it must have rubbed off on him as he was already smiling too.
"Omo mi, kaabo." He welcomed me, gripped both my shoulders and looked in my eyes. "Do you want to share the good news?"
[Kaabo: welcome.]
"Baami, there's nothing. I'm just glad it's Friday."
"Hmm..." He assessed my face for a moment, still managed to maintain his smile as he spoke, "Okay then, go freshen up." He placed a soft peck on my temple before he let go of my shoulders, and then he was on his way out of the house.
