...

Ever since the wedding, Fundy disliked rings. To be fair though, he ended up disliking marriage in general. And it took a fool or an outsider to wonder why.

His parents were married. Happily in love. Wilbur serenaded his mother with sweet words full of nectar, cradled her hand, and fiddled with her fingers—especially the hand that held her wedding ring. His mother, in return, would simply kiss his hand, the soft knuckles that would later become battered and bruised. His hands compared to hers were smooth and slender—and he too wore his ring.

Then one day things fell apart. Fundy didn't know. He didn't.

(He didn't see that his parents would fight when he was not around. Sally left impulsively, but died as she tried to come back to take her son.)

And then there was Dream. The one with a painted mask that allured him with mystery. He was a charismatic man and his father's rival.

Oh, how hard Fundy fell for him. He pleaded and pleaded, persistent after every rejection. His hope did not waver.

But it should've.

He regretted it the moment the man he fell for said yes, the moment they spent their time together. The day he proposed, because he thought marriage was some promise to be together forever, should've never happened. Dream shouldn't have said yes.

But he did.

And then he left him too. All for George. Only for George.

So imagine his reluctance when XD offered him a simple golden ring.

"What..." he looked up at the disguised god, "what is this?"

"A ring," oh, how he was ever so patient.

Two rings, in fact, rested on those creepily thin hands he slowly grew to adore.

They had been courting for a while now and ever everything that had happened, they still took things slow.

"Are you asking to marry me...?" Fundy asked and he couldn't help the fear the crept into his stomach.

The moment of silence didn't help.

As if sensing his anxiety, XD replied, "Only if you want to."

The hybrid gulped.

"I will wait as long as it takes," the god murmurs, leaning down to press his mask against Fundy's head as if to kiss him, "until you are ready."

"What...what if I'm never ready?"

"I can wait."

"Are you sure?"

"Think of it this way," the god pulls away, his other hand taking his paw, "it's a promise that we'll be together."

"Forever?"

"Until you wish to part, Fundy. Until one or both of us loses interest."

"What about you? George?"

"I've moved on," the god gently takes off his mask to reveal a void-like face, "I want you. I want you to genuinely feel loved and be loved, and I will give you anything—I would do whatever in my power to prove to you that, Fundy. Even if we may have fights, differences or maybe we will have that thought of leaving, I want to be with you. I would regret it if I chose to never ask."

And Fundy stares into the void-like expanse that was behind the mask. It was so terrifying and so intriguing all at once.

"You are the only one who does not see my face as Dream's," the god puts on the cracked mask against and the cracks shift for a moment before stilling.

"Well, you're...you," Fundy struggles to come up with words, "even if you're a part of Dream before, you're not him. He's not you."

The fox hybrid glances at the rings again.

"A promise," He whispers, "until we wish to part."

"A promise," the god affirms, "until we wish to part."

And a paw reaches for the golden ring.

...

"You've lived your final two lives to the fullest, Fundy," DreamXD murmurs, a hand holding a golden ring, "and not once did I ever regret loving you."

His long, thin fingers brush against the tombstone. The golden ring on his finger shines in the dim light.

"I will see you in the afterlife, or even the next, and I will love you all the same until you turn me away. I promise."

The god bends down to press his head against the cold stone as if to give the fox hybrid a final kiss.

"I love you, Fundy."
