She is gone but maybe it's for the best.

Nik slams his hands against the marble countertops of his lifeless kitchen. He's seething with rage. How can someone with as much power, money, and influence as him, struggle to do something as simple as find out his own fucking blackmailer? Like, Come on.

He just got off the phone with his assistant. Unfortunately, the private investigator was unable to find any leads from the phone number. Fucking Useless. After combing through every detail of Nik's own background, following up with any person Nik has ever been in any kind of contact with, the PI found nothing. It's so frustrating. He clenches his jaw. A vein pops out, interrupting the smooth surface that is his temple. He wants to punch something.

Nik takes a few deep breaths, trying to regain what little composure he has left. He doesn't know how or where this person is getting all of their information, but Nik can't even break down in the comfort of his own home without worrying about it being twisted into some potential tabloid headline. He has never been part of any drama. He's out of his league when it comes to this kind of stuff.

It's been days, far too long since he last saw her, held her, kissed her, felt her. He can't stand being away from her, especially now, knowing that she returns his feelings. He pushes himself away from the counter, turning towards the freezer, yanking out a bottle of whatever alcoholic beverage meets his rough hand. He doesn't care right now. He just needs a break.

---------

As soon as he dropped Jane off at his Nan's house, he peeled out of the driveway, headed towards an address to some vacant-looking warehouse. Upon his arrival, he spots only one other vehicle in the sizeable parking lot. 'That's gotta be him.'

Nik parks his car in the parking space directly beside the car that he assumes is his tormenter's. He steps out onto the solid blacktop, closing the car door behind him. The driver's side door of the other car opens up and out steps a teen holding a manila envelope with Nik's name on it. Nik sighs, realizing that this is obviously not the perp that he's searching for. It's just a fucking kid.

"N-Nik Romano?" The teen fails at hiding his jitters. He obviously isn't experienced with this kind of thing. Nik nods and sticks out his hand. The teen drops the manila envelope into it before retreating back into the beat-up rust-red pick-up truck that brought the boy here.

As soon as Nik is back in his own car, the truck zooms out of there. Clearly, the boy wanted to be there even less than Nik did. The fucker probably handed the kid a wad of cash, gave directions, and left the poor boy with more questions than answers. Nik runs his hands through his hair. It's gotten a bit longer. Not long enough that it looks unkempt or unruly, just long enough to showcase his natural curls.

He peels open the envelope and pulls out some papers and some photographs. He drops the papers and envelope on the passenger seat and stares at the photos. His heart drops into his stomach. There are close-ups of Jane, entirely nude, with Nik thrusting into her. Somehow, someone used a drone or something to take explicit photos of their poolside sexcapades. Fuck.

He drops the images onto his lap, reaching over to grab the remaining documents. The first page is a set of instructions. On the second page are the repercussions for not following the steps on page one. Nik decides to start with the instructions, not yet prepared to know what kind of fucked up shit this villain plans on doing to Jane or his company.

He doesn't give a rat's ass about his own reputation, the reputations of others are what he wants, and needs to protect. So many people rely on him, not just for income but for medications, internships, scholarships, etc. If his company were to fall, the community would lose so many resources. Jane could lose her career and credibility as a researcher. Her whole life could be ruined by this. He shakes his worries from his head, deciding to focus on the instructions.

Now that you've seen what I can do, here is what I want you to do. I want you to break her heart. That little 'girlfriend' of yours doesn't belong to you. Either you let her go in the harshest way possible, or I ruin her life, your life, your company, everything. You have two days to decide how to do it before I release these photos.

Nik crumples up the piece of paper, throwing it at the dashboard. Is he willing to lose Jane? Is he willing to ruin her life because he selfishly wants to be a part of it? His hands grip the steering wheel so hard that his knuckles turn white. He can feel his anger growing, but more than that, he can feel his heart breaking. He knows that he can't put her in harm's way just because he loves her. Their relationship just isn't meant to be right now. At least not until he can find a way to pin the culprit down and make him pay.

He's made up his mind. He has to break it off. Just until he can guarantee her safety along with the stability of his company. Just until he finds this criminal, and makes him pay for threatening to hurt Jane.

---------

Two days. That's how long he has to figure out how to break things off with Jane. After his meet-up, he headed home and spent the rest of the day drinking. Before he can begin planning what to do, he needs to grieve this loss. Eventually, he fell asleep on the sofa in the living room, spilling the contents of whatever bottle out onto the white fabric.

---------

One day. Tomorrow is when it ends. Nik spends the morning throwing up whatever poison knocked him out last night. Once he finishes that, he showers, eats some hangover-cure breakfast concoction, and then heads to the library to think about the best way to let her down easy, to hopefully salvage whatever he can of their relationship and her heart. Maybe dinner?

Nik scours the internet, looking for a nice Italian place. He wants to treat her one more time. He finds a place. Dinner, then what? What kind of place do you take your new girlfriend to in order to let her know that it isn't going to work out? Somewhere private probably. He doesn't want anyone to hear or see the pain that Jane is surely going to experience as soon as he tells her.

He remembers the instructions. Nik has to break her heart and he has to make it hurt. Can he even do that? Jane's semi-shy smile and childlike wide eyes fill his mind. He sees the captivating creature's smile falter. Her eyes aren't bright and starry now. They are dark and lifeless. Her skin is pale, almost sickly. Her hair is dull. She isn't Jane. She is a shell.

He clutches his chest, the ache in his heart almost too much to bear. It has to hurt, but that doesn't mean he has to be evil or cruel. Jane is his love. She has his heart. He has to tell her the truth. It will hurt her, but maybe she will understand. Maybe she won't resent him? That has to be enough to satisfy the conditions of that monster. Nik refuses to do it any other way.

Dinner. After Dinner Activity. Break up.

With some semblance of a plan, he messages his assistant to set everything up for him. Once he does that, he reaches out to Jane.
