The library has some pretty nice chairs. I've learned this since Calder and I have been sitting in them waiting for the girls to arrive for like ten minutes. The library is a nice sized building, bigger than I would've expected, but that just makes it easier to avoid unwanted attention as we do our research.
The door opens and we look up, waiting for whoever it is to round the shelves into view. Hazel and Josie appear, followed by Theo and Lewis and Noah and Gwinny. Oh my god. I face palm. We are so gonna get caught because of them. My brother shakes his head but is still smirking, like he actually finds this funny. Not surprised he does.
"When we agreed to let you two help us, we did not tell you to bring everyone else too," I say, sighing defeatedly.
"We told you before, us new kids need to stick together. Plus the more the merrier." Josie shrugs.
Of course. Should've seen that one coming honestly. I don't know why I expected anything different.
Noah gives Calder's computer a suspicious look. "So what are we doing again? I just got dragged along without explanation."
"We're ghost hunting!" Hazel declares.
"No we're not," I say, shooting her a look. "We're investigating why the camp directors act so weird about the old graveyard in the forest."
Theo does a double take. "Graveyard? I didn't know there was one of those."
"Yup, there is. It's on the other side of the camp boundaries and Mr. Billie and Ms. Iris have forbidden campers from talking about it apparently. Now that I think about it, that really important rule about never crossing the boundary line is sounding even more suspicious now," Calder says, opening up his laptop.
"Great. Now I'm getting roped into solving mysteries," Noah grunts.
I shoot em a glare. "You can leave if you want."
Noah's eyes catch mine, "Yeah like I'm going to leaving my little sister here with you guys."
Rude much. Not like Gwinny being here was part of our plan anyways. It's Hazel and Josie's fault for bringing her, not mine. But saying that would just escalate the situation and the last thing we need right now is to piss em off.
The others all gather around Calder and I, since he's the one with the computer and I'm the one sitting next to him. Though, Noah does it more begrudgingly like e's trying to make it as clear as possible e really doesn't wanna be here.
We start by searching things like 'old graveyard in Treasure Forest' and 'History of Treasure Forest', and after many, many tries, we still don't find anything useful. It's like no one knows anything about the graveyard except clearly the camp directors do otherwise they wouldn't be so creepy and weird about it.
"This is getting us nowhere," Noah says, glaring at no one in specific.
Theo's already started working on some gadget he pulled out of his pocket. Lewis keeps making stupid jokes. Gwinny's organizing books by size nearby. And Josie is entertaining herself by playing with her own curls.
Hazel, on the other hand, is just as excited as she was finding out about this in the cabin. Gotta admit, I'm running out of ideas here. Suddenly Calder, who had been lost in thought a second ago, looks up at us.
"I just thought of something!" he says, furiously typing into the search bar.
"What is it?" I ask, leaning over to see the screen.
He types 'Camp Twin Tails kids' and a suggestion pops up with 'missing case'. Isn't that nice and totally not creepy at all. The two of us exchange a look before Calder clicks on it. The first result is an old newspaper article from July 1990. The headline?
Four kids go missing at Camp Twin Tails
"What?" I hesitate. Sure kids go missing, it happens. Our society sucks yeah. But four? All from the same summer at this camp?
"'Four kids were announced missing at Camp Twin Tails earlier this week, eight year old twins Victoria and Taylor Hart, and twelve year old twins Zachery and Derek Miller. Eye witn-'" Calder's cut off by several books flying off the shelves nearby. From the sound of it, more are launched off selves all around the room, being thrown violently to the floor by some unseen force. I stare in disbelief, as do the others. What the actual f-
The books stop. The library falls silent again. We all stare wide-eyed at the mess of scattered books strewn across the floor.
Hazel speaks first. "Two times is a coincidence, three times is a pattern."
"Those ghosts must be bookworms," Lewis awkwardly chuckles.
Really wishing I was back at my house right about now.
