Steve wakes up a few hours later at the feeling of Eddie's nails digging into his chest, sharp enough to make him jump and try to pull away. Eddie just grips tighter, though, whining low in his throat like a scared animal. Steve tries to blink himself more awake, to figure out if this is what he thinks it is, when Eddie starts to thrash against him like he's trying to get away, getting tangled up in the blanket around his legs and hissing through extra sharp teeth.
Steve, unable to extricate himself and hoping fervently that Eddie doesn't rip into him like a scratching post the second he wakes him up, digs his own nails into Eddie's arm to try and wake him up. It takes a second, but then Eddie's eyes flash open, glowing red in the darkness. It's honestly kind of fucking terrifying for a split second, but then Eddie's pulling back and away from Steve, chest heaving as he stares into space and his eyes slowly go back to normal.
"You wanna talk about it?" Steve asks.
When Eddie speaks, his voice comes out shaky. "There's nothing to talk about."
Steve scoffs. "Yes, actually, there is!"
"I can't remember them, okay?" Eddie snaps. "...I know that you're worried. And I know that you should be, since we know that he's...planning shit. But I really can't ever remember them when I wake up, okay? So what am I supposed to do about them?"
"You know what happened with Max, Eddie. We have to make sure nobody's falling through the cracks, that's what Nancy said!"
"Well, if Nancy said it..."
Steve stares at him, confused. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Eddie drags a hand over his face. "Nothing, nothing. Sorry. I just...all I know is every time I wake up there's, like, a minute where I don't feel in control of myself. Like I could hurt someone, or do something awful, or go... go back there."
"That's literally the exact thing you're supposed to tell everyone! Especially if you feel like going back there!"
Eddie looks despondent, staring straight ahead. His fingernails are in his mouth, his knee jiggling rapidly. "...Yeah. I know."
"Okay, then, tomorrow, okay?"
Eddie's adam's apple jumps, his eyes flickering. "...Tomorrow."
