You walked forward through the mist. Following the sounds of battle in the distance. You had grown tired of carrying your sister. So, she now walked beside you. One hand gripping yours tightly and the other clutching the elephant to her chest.
You didn't know how long you had spent trying to convince your sister to stay home only to concede. But you hopped you weren't too late. Regardless every fiber in your being told you to go faster. To run as hard as you could to make sure they were okay. But you had your sister, and you didn't want her to panic. Weird how you continued to think of her wellbeing even in this situation.
But you walked on sister in hand. Passing through fog and mist. Following the sounds of chaos that you dreaded yet hoped to reach quicker.
To keep your mind occupied as you walked ahead. You began to study the terrain around you. Looking to the houses and sidewalks you passed by that slowly receded into the fog. The streets were eerily quiet. It seemed that wherever your parents had gone most others had followed. And their families and friends stayed behind huddled in at home. Waiting for the storm to pass.
Maybe this was a mistake. Maybe you should go back. Take your sister home and huddle together until they returned home. But you couldn't do that. Your conscience wouldn't let you. And for reason you still couldn't fully grasp. You continued to pull yourself forward. Until you finally made it.
The fog in front of you cleared. Revealing a bridge standing before you. Smoke seemed to pour from farther down the bridge mixing with the fog and mist. Bodies lay motionless all along it. Some dressed in shiny enforcer armor. But most were distinctly faces of undergrounders. You could hardly bring yourself to look at them. Farther down the bridge your view was obscured by smoke and fog. But you could distinctly hear the sound of battle. And that feeling of dread inside of you only intensified. You could feel your sisters grip tighten on your arm. And turning your gaze back down to her. You couldn't help but try one more time.
Kneeling down once again you looked into each other's eyes, and you tried once more.
Y/n: Sis, please stay here. I. . . I need you to stay safe. If they really are gone, I can't lose you too.
You felt your eyes water up once more as the words poured out. And you could see your sisters do so as well. But surprisingly she looked at you and spoke. Not with a tone of defiance or stubbornness. But one of understanding.
Sister: You'll come back with them?
Y/n: Yes. Yes, I will. I will. I'll come back with them.
Your sister nodded and buried herself into another hug with you. The tears feely flowing from you both. But you couldn't afford to stay there for long. Your body was already pulling you to keep going.
Slowly you moved away from the hug and stood. Looking down at your sister one more time.
Y/n: I love you. Always remember that.
She could only bring herself to nod in response. And slowly you turned to face the bridge. And you ran as fast as you could into the smoke and fog ahead.
Running forward most of your view was obscured by the encompassing smog and embers. But even in your limited vision you could still see the motionless bodies pass by you as you ran on. Pushing past smoke, fog, and debris you pushed ahead as fast as your legs would carry you. The sense of dread in your stomach only seeming to grow. But you kept going. Until you the fog and smoke began to dissipate. And you slowed as a familiar sight stood before you.
Shield and revolver in hand your dad was fighting off two enforcers. You quickly ducked behind some debris so they wouldn't see you. But you did slowly peek over the rock to watch your father.
