He rode into the place he called home. The people flocked around to welcome their favourite son. He was back after many months. The Palace was decked up to welcome back their Royal family. The other queens were all dressed up, hoping their king would catch a glimpse of them. Sajja Bai, the second queen, was putting on her mang tika.
" You look beautiful Ranisa!" Her maid complimented." But he will never look at me because Dheerbai will be there." There was a hint of sadness as well as jealousy.
In a bigger chamber somewhere in the same corridor another queen was doing Shringaar. But she was disturbed. After a long try, she had managed to send the crown prince away, now he was coming back again.
" Ranisa, Ranaji has arrived at the door." A daasi came in.
" Then why are you standing there? Go get me an aarthi thali quick!" She snapped.
Unlike the Maharani, she was vain and manipulative. She wore a plastic smile before stepping out of her room.
At the palace door, She stood with the Arthi thali, before all the other queens. Rana Udai Singh smiled at his beautiful wife. She did aarthi and smiled, " Welcome back."
Kunwar Pratap stepped behind Udai Singh, managing a smile. At first glance, she could tell something was amiss between the father and son. She hid a satisfying smile.
" Khamma Gani Chotima."
" Gani Khamma Kunwarsa."
He walked in past her, smiling a little at Sajja Bai. Maharani Jaivanta Bai came and smiled at Sajjabai.
" How have you been?"
" Tell me about the trip Jija, how was the wedding?" She asked excitedly.
" Come to my room Behena, we need to talk." Jaivanta Bai walked past Dheer bai as if she was non-existent, with Sajjabai following her in.
Pratap walked into his room, and for the first time, his room couldn't comfort him. There was a war in his mind. He had to strategically win this. The opponents were strong and sly.
" Dadabhai!" He turned around with a smile. His sisters Maan and Chand came and hugged him.
" We are so happy you are back."
" Me too, how have you been?"
" We are good. Daajiraj is calling you to his chambers."
" Why?"
" We don't know."
He stepped into the master bedroom and found Ranima, Majhli Maa and Choti Maa there. He knew in a second what this was about. Sajja Bai smiled at him. Udai Singh exchanged a look at Dheerbai. She cleared her throat.
" Kunwarsa, I heard that you have chosen some girl."
" Her name is Ajabde. " Jaivanta said firmly.
" A Samanth Putri."
Pratap stood in silence.
" Kunwar Pratap you are too naive." Dheerbai continued. " We should have never let you go alone. Those people trapped you. They are after your money and status."
" Dheer Bai ji, You are insulting people you don't know." Jaivanta snapped angrily.
" Jija, he is a child, but you? Can't you see what we can do? Have you ever heard a Rajput prince marry a commoner?"
" I don't think in any way Ajabde is lesser than any princess as far as her sanskaar and discipline go. And as far as Kunwar Pratap is concerned, he is not the child who used to blindly listen to you Dheerbai ji..." Jaivanta Bai was firm on the last part.
" Bas Kijiye!"
Kunwar Pratap broke his silence. This was his family. Divided into two on every issue however big or small. He felt trapped and difficult to breathe, he heaved a sigh and looked at Dheerbai.
" Noone trapped me Chotima, I chose her. I want to be with her. It is my request to give your opinion on her only after you meet her. And keep aside her status and see her as a human being. "
Udai Singh was about to say something but was stopped by Dheerbai.
" Okay Kunwar Pratap, We will go to Bijolia, I will test her myself."
" You are more than welcome to do that Chotima" He smiled sarcastically.
He walked out of the room and was running through the corridor. He needed to write to her about these developments. He was a bit scared knowing Dheerbai ji, and how Ajabde would tackle her.
" Dadabhai!" The call stopped him. He turned around and hugged his brother tight.
" Bhai Shakti! I haven't seen you in such a long time."
" Yes, how was your trip... oh I heard!" He had a smile, teasing his elder brother. Pratap looked at him with a serious face and they were interrupted by Rawat Chundawat ji.
" Where is Ranaji?"
" In his Kakhsh, is something wrong?" Pratap asked worriedly.
" Yes, come with me." The princes followed the Rawat back to their father's chambers.
" What is it Rawatji?"
"There is a village 20 km from Bijolia, a horrible storm struck there and people lost lives, homes and property. I have come to ask you for help. We need men and aids as well." Rawatji explained. Bijolia... the name is coming up too much in the past few days. Udai Singh was visibly disturbed.
"Take what you need."
" We will go with you!" Kunwar Shakti spoke before Pratap.
" Okay, I will make arrangements to leave immediately."
The princes went to inform their mothers. Udai Singh was lost in thoughts.
" Is Something wrong Ranaji?"
" Yes, I mean... You are like family Rawatji... I won't hide from you."
" What is it?"
" Kunwar Pratap wants to marry Rao Ramrakh Punwar's daughter."
" The Samant Of Bijolia?" Rawat ji was not shocked. He knew his prince followed his heart.
" Yes, and Jaivanta Bai is with him too. It's not that I didn't like the Girl but she is a commoner."
" I understand your dilemma, Hukum."
" Dheerbai is against it too, it is about our reputation. But we all know Kunwar Pratap."
" Yes, he can die to get what he wants. Mewar can not lose him. Not with Akbar around. The only thing that makes Akbar scared is Kunwarsa."
" What do you suggest?" Udai Singh asked helplessly.
" Give him what he wants Ranaji, eventually he is a human being who seeks personal happiness."
Rawat Ji's words were on Udai Singh's mind. We can not lose Kunwar Pratap. He was in his room absent-minded before he called in his wives.
" We are leaving for Bijolia."
" But Ranaji Kunwar Pratap is not here yet, let him come back."
" Jija, He is near Bijolia only. Write to him to meet us there. By the time he will reach, we will be there a day or so." Dheerbai was looking for this opportunity. One day alone with Ajabde and her job will be done. A reluctant Jaivanta Bai agreed.
Meanwhile, Kunwar Pratap, Kunwar Shakti and Rawat Ji arrived at the village. It looked like a battle had been fought there. Very few houses stood firm, others were devastated. Lives were lost, and people were homeless. Mothers and wives were crying over dead bodies, it was a horrible sight. Kunwar Pratap ordered his troops to start the rebuilding activities and put Rawatji on its head. Kunwar Shakti was already busy arranging medical aid for the poor and injured. Kunwar Pratap heard a villager say many orphans had now lost their homes and families and were living in the village ashram. Kunwar Pratap decided to visit the poor children.
" So, Bappa Rawal founded our kingdom, he was alone, without family or friends, but Eklinhji helped him. So we see, when we are alone, we always have Eklingji."
The children gathered around to hear this mesmerizing tale of hardship and hope. Kunwar Pratap stopped at the voice. For a moment he thought he had gone mad, imagining things. He looked at the clearing where the children sat listening to the stories.
" Ajabde!" His voice startled her. " Kunwarsa You are here?" She was shocked. A smile broke on his face.
" Ranaji send us."
" Us?"
" Yes... Woh..."
" Dadabhai!" Kunwar Shakti came up with something but stopped looking at Ajabde.
" He is my brother, Kunwar Shakti."
" Gani Khamma Kunwarsa." She folded her hands. Shakti looked at his brother clueless.
" This is Ajabde, Ramrakh ji's Daughter."
" Ajabde Bha... Baisa!"
Shakti exclaimed as Ajabde turned clueless to Pratap. You told him? was the look on her face.
" So, you are here because we are?" Shakti gave a weird smile.
" No No I am here for the last two days, Daata was unwell, and he send me for help, I am helping the orphans here..." She was explaining as Shakti looked at her amused.
" It's okay Baisa, Breath! Dadabhai we need more medicines." Kunwar Pratap was thinking from where.
" There is another village a few miles away, they can help I am sure."
" yes, Dadabhai you go there at dawn."
They were leaving when Ajabde said, " Where are you staying?"
" At the Khema." Shakti frowned.
" Come with me, I have a hut here, the villagers gave me." She offered to a much pleased Shakti.
" I will go get Rawat Ji."
Kunwar Pratap walked away with a smile.
At the hut, Ajabde was cooking while the Daasi accompanying her was cleaning the empty room. It was for the guests. Kunwar Pratap's horse came up to the hut along with the other two. He got down as she came out.
" This is Rawat ji."
" Khamma Gani, I have heard so much about you Rawat ji, Daata always talks of you." She touched his feet.
" Gani Khamma Ajabde Baisa. Your father tells a lot about you too..."
" Padhariye."
The smell of Khichdi made Shakti hungry. He said in a childish eagerness, " Aree wah Khichdi!"
Ajabde smiled as she served them. Rawat ji praised her cooking skills. He saw Pratap beam in pride. He hoped and prayed that Rani Dheerbai didn't snatch away that smile.
" Am keeping Sarang here at the shed, feed him once, we will be back in the evening." Kunwar Pratap was very particular about Sarang.
" Don't worry Kunwarsa he will be taken care of." She assured.
Kunwar Pratap stepped out with the two but after a few minutes' walk he noticed his sword missing, he must have left it in the hut. He went back.
The silent hut was filled with a voice. He stepped at the window overlooking the shed where Sarang stood with Ajabde.
" Sarang, Eat! I am Kunwar Pratap Singh, I am ordering you, Eat!" She was holding a twig like a sword in front of Sarang, trying to imitate his master as he ate.
" What is this? Even Akbar is scared of me and you are not?!"
Her childish play and the twinkle in her eyes made him smile. He slowly walked up behind her, carefully, not letting her realize his presence.
" I only fear Eklingji, Ranima... and Ajabde!" She continued in a thick voice. He just couldn't control his laughter. It startled her.
" Hahahaa! What are you doing? When do I talk like that?"
She was taken aback, visibly scared.
" You... Here... Woh... I... Shamma..." She fumbled. He gave a serious look.
" You think I am scared of you?"
Her eyes widened.
" No. No... No... I was ... I am so sorry." She looked like she was going to cry.
"Let's see who is scared of whom." He stepped forward as the twig fell from her hand, scaring her. He laughed again!
" Ohh Ajabde, look at you, you were about to cry."
" No, I was not."
" You were scared."
" No."
" Yes."
" No!"
" Dadabhai..." Shakti thought he was interrupting something. They stood so close. Ajabde moved away, inside the hut.
" Ji?" Pratap looked at Shakti who was beaming at him.
" Woh..." He had forgotten what he wanted to say.
"Let's go." Shakti followed his brother out.
That evening Pratap sat patting Sarang, his job here was done, and Rawatji could take care of the rest. Shakti wanted to go back to Chittor. Only after Pratap bought the medicines. A letter in his name arrived from Ranima.
" Pratap, Dheerbai has convinced Ranaji to visit Bijolia immediately, we are leaving, with Sajjabai. After your work, come to Bijolia."
Pratap immediately got up and searched for Ajabde. She was in the kitchen making dinner.
" Ajabde, we need to talk."
" What is it? " She asked worriedly. He handed her the letter.
" Chotima?" She asked. He nodded. They stared at each other in silence. Pratap held her hand in his.
" Are you ready for the war?"
" I think I am."
" But first I will go take the medicines then we leave for Bijolia."
Kunwar Shakti heard the plans and decided to play Cupid.
" Why don't you and Baisa go to the village tomorrow? You take the medicine, I will meet you at the outskirts in the evening and by night you will be in Bijolia."
Pratap understood what his brother was trying to do.
" No No... " Came a fumbled reply from Ajabde. " I have sent a letter to bring my Palanquin. They won't arrive until evening."
" So you go on the horse!" Shakti's suggestion surprised her. " I will bring the palanquin to you at the outskirts of the village once they arrive. That way you don't have to do the same journey twice!"
" Me? Horse?"
" She doesn't know how to ride a horse!" Pratap said plainly.
" Teach her! You won't leave before mid-day, teach her the basics and you will be there." Shakti was adamant.
That evening in her warrior outfit she stood in front of Sarang. He had decided to train her with Sarang since they knew each other, a new horse would be more difficult.
" Get on the horse!" It was too tall for her. She wouldn't give that excuse. She tried thrice.
" You need a push?" He offered.
" No, I will do it." She insisted.
Losing her balance she fell as he caught her, inches from the ground. She held his neck with both hands in fear as he smiled seeing her scared face.
" I..." She started as he put her down.
" This is impossible, has to be another way..." he concluded.
She stood silent as if she had failed him.
" We can ride on Sarang till the next village."
" We?"
" Yes we, you and me on Sarang. " He pointed.
" But... "
" You can't ride a horse, you can't ride with me, you can't get your palanquin. What is the solution here?" He asked staring at her. He nodded his head and was about to live.
" I will ride, with you." Came a soft reply as his face lit up with a smile.
" We leave after our first meal then."
She nodded.
She sat uncomfortably in front of him, his chest brushed her side. She was nervous. She was wearing a lehenga, sitting with both her feet on one side. Her face hidden in the dupatta she could see his hands, the horse's ears and a little road ahead. Was it him or the horse that made her nervous, she had no clue. As they rode out of the village he increased the speed, making her close her eyes in fear. She caught his hands afraid she might fall. He smiled a little.
" Ajabde Baisa, is this the limit of your bravery? Then you forget facing Dheer Bai ji." He taunted making her angry.
" Who said I am scared?"
" Your Hands. " He chuckled. She quickly removed them.
After a day at the village, they were ready to leave. Kunwar Shakti was there with the palanquin and guards. They bid him goodbye. Pratap hugged his brother.
" Will meet soon." Shakti smiled at Ajabde.
Meanwhile, Mewar's Royal Family Had Arrived at Bijolia. Raoji and Hansa Bai welcomed them cluelessly.
Udai Singh made an excuse that they were visiting the temple nearby and hence came to stay.
Dheerbai asked, " Where are your daughters?" with a smile.
Hansa replied. " Ajab is not home, Ratan is coming."
" Not home? Where is she?" This time it was Jaivanta Bai.
" She had gone to help the villagers after the storm."
Jaivanta's face lit up, " Pratap is there too, maybe they will come back together."
Dheerbai was disappointed as Sajja and Jaivanta exchanged a smile.
Raoji sat in his room wondering. Ajabde was with Kunwar Pratap. Her care for him hadn't skipped his eyes. His heart was sinking. He feared his family's reputation and his daughter's heartbreak. She was dreaming of the impossible. His thoughts travelled to the day Kunwar Pratap was almost dead. His blood smeared her hand's dress and.... his thoughts made his eyes cold. His blood was on her forehead. His wife always said matches were made in heaven, but the practical warrior and father in him refused to believe such things. He spent a sleepless night wishing Ajabde to be back soon, safely.
At Dawn, Dheerbai's sleep broke at the sound of the Nagada. She growled in anger, " Now what is going on?" She stopped passing by the maid.
" Kunwar Pratap and Baisa had arrived."
All through the journey, he had ridden beside her palanquin talking about everything, his family, his sisters, his wars and of the books she read, of Ratan and Bijolia. Now they came up to Hansa Bai, keeping their distance. Jaivanta hugged Ajabde.
" Come with me, I want you to meet someone."
Ajabde followed her to the guest quarters.
" Sajja, this is Ajabde." Sajja Bai got up and looked at the calm face. Ajabde touched her feet. She hugged the girl surprising her.
" Jija she is just like you!" Jaivanta nodded in approval.
Sajja Bai took out a gold bangle from her jewellery box and gave it to Ajabde who looked at Ranima.
" Take it, it's Shagun, for seeing you." Sajja Bai insisted.
" Arree, let the marriage be fixed first." Jaivanta smiled as Ajabde turned red.
" Jija, we chose our bride. We are blessing her, no one can stop this marriage." Sajja Bai smiled in confidence. " You won't let her win right Ajabde?" Her eyes were hopeful. Pratap interrupted and was surprised to find Ajabde there. He looked away.
" Woh... Majhli Maa..."
" What happened Kunwar Pratap? You never come to my room in Chittor and today as soon as she is here..." Both turned red.
" Majhli Maasa... " He continued.
" I have to go." She interrupted and their eyes met.
" Aree, you stay Ajabde, I have a lot of things to tell you. Am sure you don't know Kunwarsa's stories... Jija Remember that time Shakti and he was almost caught by the Afghans stealing mangoes..."
" Bhai Shakti said he is going back to Chittor, I will take your leave." He went away without even listening as Sajja Bai sat with Ajabde.
Dheerbai was moving towards the room Pratap came out of. She stood in the doorway, watching the three giggle like a unit.
" Jija..." Her appearance itself drained the smile from their faces.
" Come in Dheerbai ji."
She walked in scrutinizing the girl before her. Simple, calm, there was an aura of goodness around her. Just like the Maharani. But for Dheerbai she was another shield in Pratap's life.
" This is Ajabde."
" Gani Khamma." Ajabde touched her feet.
" It's okay." She didn't bless. " Do you know why we are here, Ajabde?" She was straight to business.
" I think I do, Choti Rani Sa. But you can clear my doubt and tell me." She was quick with words. Dheerbai hated her already.
" You have to do some things as I say..."
" As you wish Ranisa."
" First start by cooking the lunch, 56 dishes, for everyone, from the Royal Family to the Daasis, alone."
Jaivanta Bai interrupted, and Dheerbai stopped her. " Ranaji told me I can test her."
" As u wish." Ajabde was still with a confident smile as she walked out.
In the kitchen Ajabde was sitting worried, she had shown her confident self to the opponent but now she had to do this task but how? The Daasis helped cut the vegetables and keep the cereals but she had to cook alone. She started with the rice, three types, and six dishes of rice. She said in her mind. Suddenly she heard footsteps behind her.
" Ekanth." His voice scared the maids.
" Kunwarsa..."
" I am so sorry Ajabde, she is giving you impossible things..."
" It's okay, it will all be done, don't worry she reassured."
" Let me help." This made her laugh.
" You don't know what's what around the kitchen, how will you help?"
" I don't know, I want to help."
" Then go and let me work. " He looked at her helplessly as she smiled, indicating for him to leave.
Since dawn, Ajabde was in the kitchen till past noon. It was time for lunch. Rana Udai Singh and Raoji were shocked to see so many different things on their plates. Kunwar Pratap smiled at his mother. Dheerbai was in shock. She had underestimated her opponent. This time she had to do something bigger. Udai Singh couldn't help but praise Ajabde as she looked at Dheerbai with a smile that made her fume. In his mind, Udai Singh had made his decision.
The next day Pratap had to go to Kelwara with Raoji and Rana Udai Singh to check on the Bhils. Early at dawn Ajabde cooked and packed food for the journey. They hadn't talked since the kitchen but his smile was enough to praise her food. She rushed out as they were about to leave.
" Daata!"
" Ajabde? What are you doing up so early?" Udai Singh was shocked as well as he looked at Pratap who knew his Ajabde too well to be shocked.
" I cooked for your journey, here. " She handed her father the food. She watched them leave as he turned back at her with a smile.
Dheerbai was waiting for this moment. She asked Ajabde to make a chunri for her. Ajabde was up to the work all day and at last satisfied, she took it to Dheerbai. Although Dheerbai liked the chunri she threw it on the floor.
" The Royal family doesn't wear such cheap designs, we are not poor Samanth." Ajabde was angry. She picked up the work and said, " I will do it again Ranisa."
" You? Again? No, thank you. You, Samanth people, have such poor choices, not your fault though, it's in your blood to be low class. Your mother's clothes and father's behaviour say so. He talks like he owns the place!" Ajabde had heard enough.
" Ranisa you are insulting my family without a reason."
" Ohh, you want a reason? You trapped Kunwarsa! Jija can't see it, I can! You are after his status."
" Really Choti Rani sa? And what about you? Aren't you after him too? You think he is dumb enough not to realize that ?" Ajabde's words shocked Dheer Bai.
" How dare you? Just how dare you commoner girl talk to me like that?"
" You insulted my people, my blood Ranisa. I just told the truth."
" Ajabde!" Hansa Bai slapped her daughter, shocking her. " Don't you know how to talk to a queen?" Hansa Bai was scared.
" Touch my feet and say sorry."
"I won't Ranisa, I did nothing wrong." Ajabde stood her ground. She was like his shadow, exactly like him. Dheerbai couldn't help but think they were so perfect.
" Ajabde!" Hansa's shout made Jaivanta walk in.
" Say sorry," Dheer replied.
" What is happening here? Ajabde?" Jaivanta asked for an explanation. Ajabde told her everything as Dheerbai stood there.
" Dheerbai I think you started this."
" Jija you always think I am wrong. This girl has no manners. Being a Samanth Putri she spoke to me like this, if she marries Kunwarsa he will be doomed." Her words made Ajabde leave the room.
Yes, she had lost her temper in this game of cold war. She was not used to such complex relationships.
Hansa Bai was crying continuously. She knew this news will reach Rana Udai Singh and the consequences will fall on Raoji. More, she was worried for her daughter and Kunwar Pratap's future. Jaivanta Bai asked Sajja Bai, " Where is Ajabde? I have to make this right."
" I can't find her Jija!" The whole palace looked for her in vain.
Ratan found a letter addressed to her.
" Dearest Ratan, I just want to get out of this complicated life. I always loved things simple, I can't pretend things are perfect when they are not. I am going to Guruji's Ashram for a few days until Kunwar Pratap goes back to Chittor. I see no hope, Ratan. Don't tell them where I am. Am just hurt, because I know I hurt Maasa and Ranima. They had so many expectations from me. I let them down. I let Kunwarsa down. Your Jija."
Ratan destroyed the letter immediately. Dheer Bai was scared, this girl ran away now she will get all the sympathy. She knew her game well...
Pratap was shocked to come back to a dark and silent Mahal. Ratan greeted them.
" Where is your Maa sa?" Raoji asked.
" She is in her room Daata, ill."
" What happened?"
" Woh, Jija..."
" Ajabde? What Happened?" Udai Singh enquired.
" She left, without telling anyone after Dheer Bai insulted her," Jaivanta replied to a shocked Ranaji.
" Left? Where?" Pratap was visibly angry.
" I don't know I swear!" Ratan's face said she was lying.
" Ratan!" His voice scared her. He was in her room.
"Ji?"
" tell me where she is."
" I don't know."
" I know you are lying."
" Jija doesn't want you to know."
" It's an order, tell me."
" Guruji's Ashram."
" Whose?"
" Raghavendra Rathore." The name shocked Pratap. His Guruji? What was Ajabde doing there? He went to Ranima.
" I am sorry Pratap, I couldn't do anything." He punched his fist at the wall.
" She will pay for this when I return."
" Where are you going?"
" To find Ajabde, and bring her back!" He rode off angry.
