Chapter 1
I shook my hair out one last time with a defeated sigh and left it as it was, sitting messily upon my head, sticking out in all the wrong directions. In the kitchen I could hear my father singing along to the radio and my mother complaining about his singing. I cracked a smile at their bickering, knowing that it wouldn't last long and by the time I got home from work they'd undoubtedly be dancing in the living room or preparing dinner together with the odd glass of white wine and a few silly jokes.
With my hair now as good as it was going to get, I set down my hair spray and jogged down the stairs where a plate of toast was waiting for me in the kitchen. Grabbing a piece, I stuffed it in the mouth and swallowed as much of the bread as I could. My mother watched me wolf down my breakfast with an amused look on her face, the short woman smiled up at me and asked, "will you ever be on time?"
"Have I ever been?" I retorted with a smirk to which my mother shook her head. I planted a quick kiss on mom's cheek and called a goodbye to my father who was still singing along to Eric Clapton - his favourite - in the kitchen. "Love you," I called, earning mumbles in reply from my parents before I hopped into my car.
I didn't have the greatest paying job in the world, which explained why I was twenty three and still living with my parents, but I loved working at the nursing home and had made a lot of friends there. It was only a fifteen minute drive from my house to work and when I arrived my boss, Amanda was standing under the smoking shelter, shielding herself from the rain with a lit cigarette between her lips, the older woman smiled kindly at me and gave a curt nod which I returned once I'd tugged on a jacket and pulled up the hood, running into the building as fast as I could to avoid the sudden heavy rain - it was dry when I left the house!
"Good morning, Jack," I was greeted by one of the residents here, Flo, she was a ninety two year old ex factory worker for Wyoming, she moved here in the eighties to be with the man of her dreams and had three kids with him but now, she had been dumped here because her son had moved to Australia at the drop of a hat and her two daughters cared more about the latest hair and fashion trends than their amazing mother. I couldn't fathom why they didn't want Flo around, she had the greatest World War Two stories.
"Hey, Flo," I smiled warmly, pressing a kiss to the elderly woman's cheek and making her laugh. "How's the grand kids?" I asked, I knew how much Flo loved to see her two grandsons, Tommy and James and they finally visited yesterday after three months of ignoring her. The woman's bright blue eyes lit up at the mention of the two boys and she went on to tell me about the teenage boys and how they brought her some daisies and a teddy bear. I listened intently to my friends story, resisting the urge I had to scoff and rant about how they only came here when they wanted something but I could never hurt Flo like that, she was much too sweet.
"That's great, Flo," I smiled, wrapping one arm around her shoulder in a quick hug. "But I have to go check on Mrs Peters, it says here she just got back from her hip replacement surgery yesterday," I explained before hurrying off to see another of the residents.
