After Eleven had moved away and Billy had died, Y/N had found Max's behaviour to be... strange.
Stranger than strange. She was like somebody totally different than who she had met two years back in 8th grade.
One day, Y/N finally built up the courage to give herself a reality check and ask Max about her behaviour.
It was after the day Max had been cursed by Vecna for the first time.
"Max", Y/N caught up to her in the forest, "I just want you to know that you can talk to me." Max nodded: "Thanks, I appreciate it."
"So what's wrong?", Y/N looked at Max.
"What?", Max stopped walking.
"What's wrong?", Y/N repeated, keeping her eyes fixated on Max's, "Talk to me..."
Max looked around, keeping an eye out for the others: "I just need someone in my life to get it structured. To handle all the selfish ways I've spent my time without... you."
Y/N listened to Max calmly, looking at her.
"Giving me love when I am down and need another, but I've gotta get away and let you go, I've gotta get over you", Max ranted, "But... I love you so."
Y/N's eyes widened: "You love me?"
Max looked up at her, a guilty look on her face: "And I really wish I didn't, because if Vecna gets me... I'm dragging you into everything."
Y/N looked at Max, a soft expression painted onto her face: "I love you, Max. I really do. And I don't want you to worry about getting haunted by Vecna, 'cause he's not gonna get you. Not again."
Max's face softened as she took Y/N's hand: "Thank you for being here for me. I shouldn't have broken up with you in the first place."
"It's okay, Maxi, I get it", Y/N mumbled, "It's alright."
