It didn't take long before the girls had an uneasy feeling. They had just made it to the end of Amy's driveway before Melody said,
" Ok guys maybe this isn't such a good idea after all. Maybe we should go back in before it's too late. "
Morgan stopped walking and turned around. " But you were the one who said we have to go."
Amy took Melody's hand and said, " I know your scared, so am I. But it will be ok. It's just a quick walk in the pumpkin patch and then we can run back home."
"Look even I'm a little scared. It is spooky coming out to an abandoned pumpkin patch in the dark. But we just have to do this. You all know as well as I do that if we go back inside we will regret it for the rest of our lives. " explained Morgan.
" I wouldn't go that far, but Morgan is right. Come on Melody it will be ok. It's just a quick walk in the pumpkin patch."
"Alright fine. " Sighed Melody.
Amy's house was not too far from the pumpkin patch. The volunteers that afternoon had gotten the fence taken down and had begun ripping out old vines that had sprung up over the years. The girls took one step in the pumpkin patch and looked around.
"Ok well nothing is here. Let's go. " Announced Melody.
"No no wait, I want to see something. " Morgan said.
" what is there to see?" Asked Melody.
Morgan made her way to the middle of the patch and turned to beckon her friends to follow. Reluctantly Amy and Melody followed.
" She is insane! What is there possibly to see? " Asked Melody.
"Well look at it this way. Monday morning at school we can tell everyone we walked through the pumpkin patch. "
"So? Volunteers were here before us. "
"Yes but they were here in the afternoon. We are here after dark. "
"Hey guys would you say this is the same spot where that girl stood in the legend?" Asked Morgan.
" I don't know. Maybe. Why? " Said Amy.
" Just asking. I wonder if that hole by the woods is still there. " Said Morgan.
" But you said that this would only take a second."
"You guys can go back to the house but I want to see this."
Amy and Melody looked at each other. Both wanted to go back but said, "we won't leave you. Just please let's hurry."
As they got further back into the pumpkin patch the dead and broken vines were more numerous and the girls had to be more careful where they stepped.
They were almost to the woods when suddenly they heard a snap.
" Ok did you all hear that? I say we leave now." Said Melody who stood still in her tracks.
" I'm sure it was just a dead vine someone stepped on." Assured Amy.
" I don't know about you all but I'm positive I didn't. I'm watching where I step"
"Guys look! It is still here!" Exclaimed Morgan.
" But that can't be. Surely it would be covered up by now. " questioned Amy.
" Well obviously it is still here or something recently dug another hole." Morgan slowly said.
" Come on let's go home. We saw the hole and I'm getting really freaked out."
With that said the girls began to walk back.
"See that wasn't so bad. And we didn't even see anything. " stated Morgan.
" I still say that there is something."
" I'm just glad to be going-" Amy was Inturptted when she suddenly took a step back and fell foward.
" Amy! Are you ok?" Exclaimed Melody.
Amy quickly tried to stand but fell back down. She looked at her leg and found an old pumpkin vine rapped around her jeans leg.
" Yes yes I'm fine. I guess I just tripped."
"Over what? There is nothing to trip over up this way." Said Morgan.
"How did that vine get wrapped around your leg? Whispered Melody.
Amy winced as she unwrapped the vine. "Ow. My leg is kinda sore. Let's get out of here."
The three friends hurried on home. Once they got in the door morgan went upstairs to put the coats away and Amy checked her phone.
" No phone calls. That's a good thing. And it's only 7:45."
" So what do you guys want to do now?" Asked Melody.
"Lock the doors and go to sleep. I'm bushed." Answered Amy.
Melody gave her a sympathetic look and asked, "How is your leg?"
" Just sore. That vine was wrapped kinda tight"
Morgan came back downstairs and announced, " Ok Im ready for bed."
"Us too. I don't even feel like changing into pajamas. I'm just going to bed." Said Amy.
"What about your leg? Don't you want to take a look at it and see if it is ok?" Asked Melody.
"Nope. It will be fine. Good night!"
Before long the girls were sound asleep in their sleeping bags and they didn't even stir when Amy's parents came home.
