TW: Alcohol addiction, verbal abuse, threatened murder

BEEP BEEP BEEP I hear my phone alarm ringing as I am finishing approving some purchases that were to be made. I sigh while closing my computer and I pull my keys out of my bag. I gracefully pushed my office chair away from my black desk and stood up while stretching my back due to sitting for so long.

I look at the picture frame placed on the counter across from me. I hold back tears as I begin to walk towards it hesitantly. When I am finally standing in front of it, I pick it up with a single tear falling down my face. I look at the picture of my family that was taken just hours before everything went wrong.

This scene includes verbal violence, threatened murder, and mention of a drunk man. I will mark the end of the flashback if you want to skip it.

flashback

"Date prisa niños. Ya casi está aquí. Estará bien si nos quedamos callados. Ve al ático rápidamente." (Hurry kids. He's almost here. It'll be okay if we just stay quiet. Go into the attic quickly.) I hear my mamá whisper as she pushes us up the stairs of the attic. I flinch as I hear a glass bottle break in the kitchen.

"Vuelvan aquí, pequeños demonios. En primer lugar, nunca debí tenerlos a ustedes. Yo tampoco debí haberme casado con tu patética madre. Los voy a matar a todos." (Get back here you little devils. I should've never had you guys in the first place. I never should've married your pathetic mother either. I'm going to kill all of you.) I hear my drunk papá yell as he starts to walk out of the kitchen. "

"Apuranse. Tiene un cuchillo." (Hurry. He has a knife.) I hear my mamá hurriedly say as she finally gets us all in the attic. She shuts it quickly and hurriedly hugs my younger siblings to get them to stop making so much noise. "Shhh. Todo va a estar bien." (Shhh. Everything's going to be okay.) my mother mumbles trying to convince herself more than anything. I close my eyes and promise myself that I am going to get out of this house as soon as possible.

I feel another tear fall and decide that enough is enough. I walk towards the trash with the picture frame in my hand and I throw it away. I wipe my tears away and take a deep breath in, composing myself. I straighten my suit jacket and force a confident look on my face as I open my office door.

I confidently walk towards the elevator hearing the talking once again stop and feeling many pairs of eyes watching me. I pause and turn to look at everyone confidently saying "Are you guys going to do your job or do I need to find new employees." I see everyone go back to doing their job and I continue my walk to the elevator.

Once I finally reach the elevator I walk in pressing the button for the first floor. I take a deep breath in waiting to feel the familiar feeling of eyes on me. Once, I reach the first floor I walk out of the elevator and out of the building. I breathe in the fresh fall air and decide to walk instead of taking my car knowing that I still have plenty of time.

As I'm walking down the sidewalk towards my daughter's school I hear a guitar playing so amazing that it astounds me. I look over and see a tall man with black hair and green eyes playing the guitar. I grab my wallet out of my bag and pull out a twenty dollar bill. I walk towards him leaning over to place it in his open guitar case.

"Oh, I'm not playing for money." I hear the man say as he blocks me from placing the twenty dollar bill in the guitar case. "Then why are you playing the guitar on the sidewalk?" I say confused as I pull my hand away from the guitar case. " I don't know. I just want to bless everyone with my amazing guitar skills." the man smirks at me cockily.

"I'm Matteo. Matteo Black. And you are?" Matteo says with a smirk still on his face. I hear someone from behind me gasp and they exclaim, "You don't know who she is!" I see Matteo's smirk drop as he confusedly asks, "Should I?" I turn around and shake my head at the person who intervened in our conversation. "No, no you shouldn't." I say as I place the twenty dollar bill in his guitar case. "I told you. I don't need this." he tells me trying to hand it back. I step back and say, "I don't need it either." I turn back around and continue with my walk towards my daughter's school.
