"Kylie. Know this is a lot to ask so close after your wedding but I need you."

The following pause was like torture. Granted there was reason to feel betrayed.

After risking her life to save mine, the Great Mrs. Tiffin left without even a farewell or best wishes.

Rude.

Surprisingly, she wasn't upset. Least not about attendance.

"Does it have to do with Hero?"

Um.

"How did you-?"

"Kristina. Everyone within a radius distance could guess as much. No offense. What has he done this time?"

Ouch.

But there was a good point. Seemed whenever we took one step ahead, life knocked us back ten.

"It's Diedre."

Kylie audibly huffed through the receiver.

"That woman. Will she never stop?"

This made me freeze where I stood in reception.

"Remember you bringing her up at Josephine's wedding. It was like you knew something was going on between them."

Staring at the desk it was clear the receptionist was eavesdropping but could have cared less.

This was serious. If she didn't like it-

"MRS. TIFFIN!"

Swiveling around I saw Evelyn holding several stacks of papers, peering from across a cubicle.

This couldn't be good.

"Kristina?"

Lifting the phone to my ear once more, Kylie went on.

"You at work?"

"Yeah. I am. Continue this talk at lunch?"

Another moment of silence.

"Yes. Look... Tread carefully. And not just talking about Diedre. There's only so many times someone can show they don't care before you have to start believing it."

No... Not her too.

"Noted. Thanks for the pep talk. Catch you later."

As soon as the phone hung up and I made it to Evenlyn's side, she clutched at my dress shirt.

Holy hell. This wasn't normal. Usually held herself in a higher regard than this.

What was happening?

"Where is Hero?"

Fuck. Using surnames definitely was not a good thing.

"Uh... Not sure. He may be in late. Why?"

She sucked in a sharp breath before answering.

"Care to explain why all shares this evening are in Diedre Tiffin's name?"

Well damn.

Just another thing to sort out.
