I was excited about going into Alessa's old home because we might find more answers there. It seemed kind of strange being here, but I tried not to chicken out. The house was abandoned for sure and I could tell by the outside. Vines covered the bricks and windows and as we made our way up the stairs, I could see how old the concrete was. We searched around for a key and surprisingly we found one under a rock nearby. We unlocked the door and pushed it open and it creaked so loudly. That's when I knew that the door had been locked for years. We walked into the abandoned house, entangling ourselves in sticky cobwebs which were draped over the door frame. The dark house was like the Sahara desert on a cold night. Old, shredded curtains hung from windows left and right, foreign liquid dripped from the ceiling unto the dusty marble floors, and chandeliers hung from the ceiling, almost breaking off. The house had this moldy scent that made me wrinkle my nose in disgust. The paint was peeling off the stained walls. It was a sight to see and we hadn't even explored the whole house. I shivered and Leandro asked me if I was okay. I told him that I was and he walked away to try to find some light. I doubted that the house had any electricity due to the fact that it was abandoned."No lights are working," he said pulling his phone out.
"You just figured that out," I giggled, turning on my flashlight.
I was glad that we came during the day because the light from the windows helped me see inside. I walked into the kitchen and found that there were moldy dishes in the sink. No one had been here in years, and it showed. I could see spoiled fruit in a bowl that had been picked apart by fruit flies. The house was disgusting, and it made me sick. Who would leave their house in this condition? I placed my hand on my stomach and walked back towards the living room to find Leandro. I could see family photos that were hanging on the wall, they were covered in dust. I dusted one of them off and smiled when I saw Alessa as a toddler. She was so cute, even as a kid. She was wearing a yellow dress and hat. She was gripping a sucker in one hand and a balloon in another. I wanted to take it, just to have memories of her, but I realized that it wasn't mine to take. I walked into the dining room and Leandro was looking around.
"Did you find anything useful?"
He shook his head, "not yet. But we haven't checked the bedrooms yet. There are only two bedrooms, so this should be easy."
We walked down the hallway slowly and started with the first bedroom. The room was clean to our surprise. The bed was made, despite the dust that had collected. Everything was stacked neatly and tucked away. We walked over to the closet, and we found clothes still on hangers.
"It seems like this was her mother's room."
"I wonder what her mother's name was," I whispered, pulling out paper from the desk.
"We might come across some old mail or something. Just keep looking," he said walking over to the bedside table.
"Vina Gallo."
