The Tsutsumi family had finally made time in their schedule for them to drive deep into town and visit Nanami's grandparents from her father's side. The last they had seen her was a month ago for her 4th birthday and asked to see her again.
Nanami was asleep in the back of their family car, the air conditioning gently blew and some light pop music played in the background. Nanami's mother, Mamiko, was reading the printed draft of her husband, Takiyo, printed rough draft for his next book.
They didn't live too far from the city, just on the outskirts. Their home used to be Mamiko's parents but after they passed they moved in and started to look after and upgrade the property. The small one bedroom, two bathroom, kitchen house is now one bedroom and a master, an office for Takiyto, two bathrooms, and master, kitchen, dining room, and living space. The overgrown lawn now is trimmed nicely with a few planted flowers and leafy plants.
"God, why did traffic get so bad all of a sudden? I swear we had been moving smoothly our whole trip." Takiyto said.
"Mmh well honey, the city never rest you know." Mamiko said.
"Well yeah but we've been here like sitting ducks for over 15 minutes." Takiyto grumbled.
Small ground trembles were felt but the couple shrugged it off, "Must be a train."
Little Nanami woke up from the ground shaking and rubbed her eyes ridding the sleepiness. The little girl looked out the window and saw them waiting behind cars, she waved at the other kids in the cars. After getting bored of the scenery around her she looked around the car and reached for her stuffed panda.
Takiyto's phone rang, he told Mamiko that it was his father and answered the phone.
"Hey dad, we're in bad traffic. But I say we might be there in 20 minutes if we get moving soon, we're in the shopping district. I've been staring at this red sweater, does mom have a red sweater? Traffic is so slow I probably have time to get out and buy it.
.........What's mom doing?
.........Oh really? Do you want us to pick up dessert then? Oh okay, sounds delicious."
He turned to his wife, "Mom made beef katsu bowls and cake!" and then went back to talking to his father on the phone.
Thoughts of a normal 4-year-old ran through her head, Mamiko noticed that the girl was awake. Hearing her talk to her panda toy. "Oh Nanami, did you wake? Are you thirsty honey?" Mamiko asked looking back at her.
"No, mama."
"Okay hun, we're almost there don't worry."
"Mama."
"Hmm, what is it?"
"Why are there people running?"
"Why are they ...what?" Mamiko muttered and looked up from the pages her husband typed. Nanami was right. In a distance, there were people running in the street towards them. People in front of them were getting out of their cars to try and see what was happening.
Turning off the radio and rolling down the window, she started to panic when she hears shouts from the crowd running getting louder as they approached. She couldn't find any words as she pawed at her husband's arm, he was still talking to his dad picking at his nails but Mamiko's heart was beating out of her chest.
His brows furrowed and he looked up at his wife in concern, "What's wrong honey?" Takiyto followed his wife's eyes and his jaw dropped. By this time people were hurriedly rushing past their own car, and the people in the cars next to them abandoned their vehicles and started running with the crowd.
