(Presence of blood in this chapter and the next one!)
The sun had already set for a few hours when he finally took the direction of his home.In the warm light of the streetlamps, his shoes hit the grayish cobblestones to the rhythm of his steps, while the full moon accompanied his hurried silhouette. He had just left the Mafia headquarters a few moments earlier, and had wanted to walk home to stretch his legs a bit, and forget about the exhausting day he had just spent.
Less than a year earlier, he had joined this organization for the first time, after all the fiasco that had happened to his previous group, which had met a tragic end. The betrayal of his former comrades was still present, as if engraved in him, a wound that would undoubtedly never heal.
Now that he was walking in the almost deserted streets of Yokohama, Chuuya almost regretted his decision to return by his own means, refusing the car that was at his disposal and that could escort him home without any problem.
Another ten minutes of walking, and he would finally be home. In this small apartment that he had borrowed from the Mafia after joining them, and which was much more luxurious than anything he had ever known in his life.
He did not pay anything to stay in it; but, one day, he had learned the amount of a month's rent, and since then he regretted being curious. A year in this apartment was much more expensive than what an average person could hope to earn in a lifetime.
Chuuya did not like to feel indebted to anyone more than he should. He was only sixteen years old, yet he was already planning to move out as soon as possible, in order to find another home. With his new salary, maybe he could even afford to buy an apartment, altogether?
A thought he never would have once back then, at that period of his life where most of his time had been spent in slums and insalubrity, in violence and constant fear of death. But all of that was behind him, now. More or less.
Sure, this job was not the one he had hoped to have when he was younger, but it was a lot better than nothing at all. In fact, if there had not been a disturbing element named Dazai, the job would have been a thousand times more interesting than it actually was.
Great. As he was finally about to go home, with the hope to forget everything and to bask in a nice hot bath, the memory of this filthy bastard came back to his mind, making him regret more than ever to have refused the driver's proposal, which could have brought him back home in a few minutes only. Without having the leisure to lose himself in his thoughts.
He stopped for a few moments, sighing with weariness. A small cloud of steam formed with each of his exhalations, a sign that the temperature must not be very far away from zero. If not down below.
Raising his eyes towards the night sky, devoid of stars because of the city's pollution, Chuuya saw the immense buildings that composed Yokohama, illuminated by places, full of life.
And yet, from where he was, he had the impression of being alone in the world. No one was around, neither walkers nor stray animals. In the distance, only the sound of traffic could be heard, and the discreet rumor of music, no doubt coming from a bar or whatever.
This part of the city had always been incredibly quiet at this time of night. If not to say almost deserted. The fact that it was so close to the Mafia headquarters did not help much in terms of nightlife, let alone reputation. It was better not to go out late at night in the area, at least for normal people.
Chuuya was not normal. If someone came to bother him, he would know how to defend himself. Beyond any doubt.
As he was about to leave, the redhead stopped a second time, while his eyes noticed something. A tiny little white ball, reminding the texture of cotton, fell close to his face, slowly, until its race ended on the sidewalk. Soon followed by a second, then many others.
